  1. RHSC MDA Working Group Manufacturers Forum Some conclusions and further questions Working with Industry Consultative Forum 01 October 2007, Arlington, VA, USA

  2. Using the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition • What are the issues that industry feels could or should be addressed by the RHSC? • What are the modalities that could be used to pursue these issues? • Are there collaborative activities on market development approaches that can begin now – country specific, regional or global? • Are there ways of collaborating to get better demand and market assessment data? Working with Industry Consultative Forum 01 October 2007, Arlington, VA, USA

  3. Improving dialogue with industry R&D based manufacturers Prequalified generic manufacturers • This forum should not be a “one-off” for the • Coalition – need to continue. • No reason to separate R&D companies • from prequalified/“prequalifiable” generic • manufacturers. Working with Industry Consultative Forum 01 October 2007, Arlington, VA, USA

  4. Using the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition • Companies want to be considered as real partners, not solely working for monetary gain. • How ensure that appropriate codes of ethics are observed on national basis. • Many countries remain donor dependent – UNFPA, USAID and other key donors are critical in developing appropriate links with MOH and other key opinion leaders in country. Working with Industry Consultative Forum 01 October 2007, Arlington, VA, USA

  5. Using the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition • How coordinate activities in countries in which the Coalition might focus activities in? Would companies be willing to share market segmentation or sales information? Conversely, can industry be specific about its needs? • Essential that the RH Interchange is expanded to include the private sector. But this is not addressing the private market! How expand information base to address public and private segments? Working with Industry Consultative Forum 01 October 2007, Arlington, VA, USA

  6. Using the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition • Can national strategies be developed that include industry as a partner? Are there “incentives” that the Coalition can use to stimulate industry to become a key partner? • Need to separate institutional procurement from market approaches to be developed by private sector. • Private sector key in reducing donor dependancy and in countries “graduating” from donor funding. Working with Industry Consultative Forum 01 October 2007, Arlington, VA, USA

  7. Total market segmentation High-price commercial sector products Affordable commercial products created through the PPP Donor subsidized branded products – Social Marketing Government/donor products, supplied free of charge or at minimum cost recovery Working with Industry Consultative Forum 01 October 2007, Arlington, VA, USA

  8. Using the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition • Developing or promoting second tier is a key area in which industry should be participating. This is likely to be the major way of partnering with industry. Difficult for industry to build the second tier alone, unless already have a local base . • How achieve sustainability? Donor funds and/or cross subsidies? • What coordination is required to ensure place of second tier? Working with Industry Consultative Forum 01 October 2007, Arlington, VA, USA

  9. Using the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition • Coalition’s role should be to ensure that public sector addresses the poor, and only the poor, to allow the second tier to develop. Can this be addressed by voucher or other schemes? • If industry sees that there is a third tier market, can they be induced to develop a second tier? • What are the problems that must be addressed? Are they cost and access issues? What happens when there are stock-outs in the public sector? Working with Industry Consultative Forum 01 October 2007, Arlington, VA, USA

  10. Using the Reproductive Health Supplies Coalition • Are there collaborative activities on market development approaches that can begin now – country specific, regional or global? Working with Industry Consultative Forum 01 October 2007, Arlington, VA, USA
