Land & climate • How is their geography, climate, and natural resources connected to their daily life? • Slightly smaller than Texas France covers 211,208 square miles (547,030) kilometers. • The terrain is varied, from plains to mountains and forests to farmland • Mountains stretch along the borders with Spain, Italy, and Switzerland • France boasts one of Europe's highest peaks mount blanc at 15,771 feet ( 4,087) meters • Some forest damage from acid rain; air pollution from industrial and vehicle emissions; water pollution from urban wastes; agricultural runoff

  3. history • By 51 bc, the romans had conquered the areas Celtic inhabitants, the Gaul's, who adopted the romans’ customs, language, and laws • Clovis 1, king of the frank defeated the last roman governor in ad 486. • The French consider his conversation to Catholicism in 496 the founding art of the nation , the move won him the support of the catholic church& Gallo- roman people, who helped him defeat surrounding Arian kingdoms.

  5. The people: population • France’s population is roughly around 63.7 million and is growing annually at 0.59% • Three-fourths of the population lives in urban areas. • Greater Paris claims nearly 11 million inhabitants and Marseille 1 million.

  6. The people: lanuage • French is an important international language. • It is an official language of the united nations and is second only to the English in use between nations for communication, business, and diplomacy. • Even regional dialects have lost their importance in recent years.

  7. Religion • Although about 85% of the French population is roman catholic, only about 8% activity practices the religion. • Most French Catholics celebrate the various religious holidays& attend mass once or twice a year. Half have a religious wedding and about 85% baptize their children

General attitudes • The French measure success by educational level, family reputation, and financial status. • Among the most patriotic people in the world, they are extremely proud of their culture, heritage, way of life. • The patriotism fosters a general expectation that visitors have some knowledge of French and show some appreciation for French culture

Personal appearance • In general , the French take great care to dress well, whether they are wearing formal or casual attire, and they feel more at ease with visitors who show the same degree of attention to appearance • Paris is home to many of the worlds leading fashion designers • Professional attire, depending on the business and location intends to be formal

  10. Customs and courtesies • Greetings: when greeting someone or another friend, a handshake is customary • the French handshake is a light grip and a single quick shake • Generally, the women does not offer her hand to a man but instead wants him to initiate the greeting

Current events • In January 2013, France sent armed forces into combat in Mali, answering an urgent plea from the government of its former colony in the west Africa to help blunt a sudden an aggressive advance into the center of the country by islamist extremist militants. • The state department said outright Monday that “ the U.S is not going to be engaged in combat operations in Mali” but will continue to play a keyhole in bolstering the French mission to drive Qaeda- linked rebels from the west African nation

  22. Current events essential question • How has this event affected the U.S? or how has the U.S affected this event? This event has affected the U.S by making them decide that they did not want to be engaged in the combat, which probably means that it is really serious.
