The Definition of Intercultural Communication • Intercultural Communication refers to the communication between people from different cultures • Intercultural communication occurs when large and important cultural differences create dissimilar interpretations and expectations about how to communicate competently • Sometimes used synonymously with cross-cultural communication

The Power of Language in Intercultural Communication • Verbal Communication (VC): • Made up of a system of sounds, syntax, and semantics • Differences in the amount of directness/indirectness one chooses and in the structure of conversations • Nonverbal Communication (NVC) can be divided to four categories: • Kinesics refers to body movements • Proxemics refers to space • Paralanguage refers to sounds • Chronemics refers to time

Improving Intercultural Communication • Avoid using slang and idioms, choosing words that will convey only the most specific denotative meaning • Listen carefully and, if in doubt, ask for confirmation of understanding • Recognize that accenting and intonation can cause meaning to vary significantly • Respect the local communication formalities and styles, and watch for any changes in body language • Investigate their culture's perception of your culture by reading literature about your culture through their eyes before entering into communication with them

Conclusion • Intercultural Communication is the exchange of verbal and nonverbal messages that are encoded-decoded within each interactant‘s perceptual context • Intercultural communication is essentially contextual and the foundation of all human relationships • As humans we all have the same basic needs and desires - we just have different ways of achieving them. As we learn that our way is not the only way, we develop a tolerance for difference.
