  2. The War of 1812 #3 Objective: 1) Summarize the War of 1812.

  3. Welcome to office Mr. President James Madison (D-R) beat Charles Pinckney (Federalist) in the election of 1808. Madison won again in the election of 1812. He wanted to go to war against Britain. Congress approved the declaration of war in June of 1812.

  4. A better map is on Pg. 204 of your book!

  5. War in Canada The U.S. is unprepared for war. They suffer defeats at first, however, they rebound and won several battles. Remember, the Native Americans align with the British.

  6. War at Sea The British were able to blockade the U.S. shoreline. This kept many American ships in their ports.

  7. Major Events The British capture and burn the White House and other important building in Washington, D.C. (August 1814) Jackson fought and won (defeated the British) at the Battle of New Orleans… (January 8th, 1815) *Notice this date*

  8. The End… The Treaty of Ghent: December 1814 *Notice the Date* • However, the treaty did not answer some of the big issues • Impressment • Shipping Rights Answers come a few years later…
