  4. Regionalization • Is the process of defining regions. • Is essential for teaching world geography and history. • Describes the characteristics of places throughout the world and your surrounding environment. • Can be defined by using 5 major areas.

  5. Physical Regions • Defined Regions that are not man made. • Vegetation Zones • Rivers • Mountains

  6. Cultural Regions • Regions can be defined culturally. • Areas that share many of the same or similar traditions, customs, religions, and languages can be considered cultural regions.

  7. Global Regions • Regions can be defined by global conditions such as rainfall, soil types, air temperature, and even world religions. • Why are religions considered as global regions rather than cultural?

  11. How do we define regions? • Regions can be any size. • Certain regional boundaries may only be an opinion depending on where you live. • Geographers use regions to give order to the earth’s surface. • We organize space into regions everyday.

  12. How do we organize our regions • Regions are organized by placing names with places or places with names. • Example: The Statue of Liberty is instantly associated with the United States of America. • Example: A map of the Great Plains is know as a specific place in North America. • Example: The fossil fuel oil is usually connected with the Middle East. • More Examples of regions in the U.S.A
