Do religious beliefs influence sexual activity among young people in Hong Kong? • Dr. Anita Chan, sociology professor: Some Christians are concerned with the issue of abortion. • Ms. Grace Lee, Family Planning Association of Hong Kong: Religious beliefs don’t play a very large role because religion is diffused throughout daily life. However, the Catholic church does not allow the FPA to discuss methods of contraception or prophylactics in their workshops. They must only discuss natural prevention such as the rhythm method, and abstinence until marriage. • Ms. Suvan Law, Mother’s Choice: Yes, religious beliefs are a factor because they influence one’s values and concept of life. Girls with such beliefs do not choose abortion as a parenting option.

Half of the class did not know how to use male condoms. • Ms. Lui Yun Fung from the Federation of Women’s Centers says that most women use condoms as contraception rather than as prophylactics (STI and HIV/AIDS prevention). • Dr. Petula Ho believes that people in Hong Kong think that giving young people and homosexuals information about condoms promotes promiscuity.
