About Me… • Grew up in the Lake Washington School District! • Bachelors Degree in Communication from Western Washington University • Post Graduate Certification in Elementary Education from the University of Washington. • Enjoy spending time with family and friends, traveling, hanging out on the boat, and being active! • Huge Sports Fan – Huskies, Seahawks, and Mariners!

My Goals • Offer challenging curriculum that is interesting and engaging • Help students build personal responsibility and independence • Support students’ development of critical thinking and cooperative learning skills • Provide support to students and families so every student can be successful and enjoy the year

  5. Classroom Expectations • We follow Discovery school rules • Our classroom expectations: • Be on time. • Come to school prepared and ready to learn. • Respect your rights and the rights of others to learn. • Work at learning. • Ask for support.

Infraction Steps • “Yellow Cards” – Behavior (affect MCNET TIME) -For the beginning of the year, they are trying to get less than 4 per week -Yellow Cards are given for multiple reminders of behaviors, disrespect, reports from specialists, etc.. -It is the KIDDOS responsibility to detail it in their planner and have me sign in the afternoon!

  8. Homework - Written in planners • 30 minutes nightly reading Recorded on their Friday Logs. (at least 150 minutes per week) • Nightly STUDY LINKS from MATH • IXL- This is time spent NOT mastering! (*Detail about IXL) Part of Friday Logs. • Homework assignments will ALWAYS be written in their planners • Friday Folders—Signatures! Due every Monday!

  9. Math • Letter from District – at kiddos’ desk. • Main Concepts • Multiple Digit Multiplication • Long Division • Adding/Subtracting Fractions • Measuring Angles with Protractors • Using Compasses to make Concentric Circles

Reading Skills we focus on in 4th Grade • Word Attack Strategies • Summarizing / Main idea • Elements of Literature (ex: conflict, climax) • Nonfiction text features • Character development • Supporting Conclusions with Evidence • Comparing / Contrasting (using evidence) • Author’s theme/ Author’s purpose

  11. Balanced Reading Program: • Shared Reading: • Tackling difficult texts with tough science or social studies vocabulary TOGETHER as a class. • Independent Reading • Stamina for voracious reading • Students choose just right booksand practice the skills we learned together

  12. Differentiated Reading: • Guided Reading • Flexible selection of small groups • Differentiated based on skills needed • Apply new strategies with the guidance of a teacher • Reading Conferences • Read one-on-one with teacher • Individualized support and goal setting

  21. Long Term Projects • Fall: Map of a mythical island • Winter: Science Fair Experiment • Spring: Space Research Project – “Feature article” Note: all fourth graders will do the same projects, but due dates and little details will differ.

  22. How to stay informed • Super Eagle Notebooks • All tests and graded essays/stories • Sent home about once a month • Goal Checks (science math, and reading) • Sent home immediately with signature requirement

Report Cards and GRADES • 1st Trimester: November • 2nd Trimester: March • 3rd Trimester: June 4  consistently exceeds grade level expectations 3  consistently meets grade level expectations 2  inconsistently meets expectations 1  consistently does not meeting expectations, even with extra assistance/modifications

  24. What earns a four…. Performing at a fifth grade level on fourth grade assignments TWO things must be true • CONSISTENTLY performing well above expectations • Independently performing above expectations

  25. What does not signify a four • Turning in homework on time each day (this is the fourth grade expectation) • Going above and beyond WITH an adult’s help • Going above and beyond independently on a couple of assignments

  26. Conferences • December 4th and 5th • Sign up available through volunteerspot.com. Will be posted Fri. Sept. 20th at 4:00 pm. (a reminder email will be sent out!) • Student lead conferences with parents – AMAZINGINGLY productive

  27. MSP • Fourth grade is the first time you see writing tested on the MSP! • It’s an all-day test, and goes through the entire writing process from pre-write to publish • We prepare ALL year for this by doing this same process in-class on a regular basis.

  28. Field Trips • Washington State Capitol in Olympia (hopefully!) • Nature Vision Watershed workshops • Planetarium

Fun Friday/MCNET time/Birthdays • Fun Friday is from 3:20-3:40 with the entire 4th grade and is based on HW and CW being finished and turned in. • MCNET time is from 3:00 to 3:20 and is based on BEHAVIOR – wanted to reward good behavior! • Birthdays are celebrated every last Wednesday of the month during lunch with 4th grade teachers July and August Birthdays will be celebrated in November. (No Nov. birthdays)
