CMS Beam request proposal

CMS Beam request proposal. Phase 1: 2014-2018 (up to LS2) PbPb @ 5.5 TeV: multiple runs with 1-3/nb total pPb and pp @ 5.5 TeV equivalent statistics Phase 2: 2020- (LS2 and beyond) PbPb @ 5.5 TeV: increase total Lint to 10/nb* additional nuclei (Ar+Ar?)

  1. CMS Beam request proposal • Phase 1: 2014-2018 (up to LS2) • PbPb @ 5.5 TeV: multiple runs with 1-3/nb total • pPb and pp @ 5.5 TeV equivalent statistics • Phase 2: 2020- (LS2 and beyond) • PbPb @ 5.5 TeV: increase total Lint to 10/nb* • additional nuclei (Ar+Ar?) • (ceterum censeo - pp baseline needed) • *10/nb preliminary target pending further studies, maybe more • All ion running at max. possible inst. Lumi. • PbPb~20kHz (2e27) before LS2, >50kHz (>5e27) after LS2 • pPb 5e29 - 1e30? • pp reference at 5.1 and 5.5 TeV in ncoll weighted lumi. needs to keep up with the PbPb integrated lumi. • Should be added to the presentation on special pp running conditions by H. Wessels

  2. (Examples of) Physics opportunities • Phase 1 (up to LS2) • First measurement of Z0-jet correlations • Multi-jet correlations • Detailed studies of pathlength/systemsize dependence • photon-jet vs photon pT, centrality, event plane • b-jet • Charmonium and bottomium suppression (regeneration?) • Phase 2 (LS2 and beyond) • High precision Z0-jet • Azimuthal correlations for rare probes (Ψ’) • Multi-object correlations • e.g. (photon-jet)-jet • TeV-scale jet quenching • Will prepare some example physics studies for the ECFA meeting • No time before ~August

  3. Detector upgrades • Detector upgrades are planned for pp • maintain performance for pileup > 100 running • Convergence of plans for pp (SLHC) and PbPb • Key issue for HI: Rate capability at high occupancy • PbPb input rate for high level trigger limited to < 3kHz • Highest foreseen PbPb luminosities require 0.95 rejection at level 1 (compared to 0.5 achieved in 2012) • jet triggers • single calo tower triggers (⇒ HLT single track trigger) • requires background subtraction at level 1 • First round of detailed studies concluded

  4. Level 1 trigger upgrade • “2015 upgrade”: addtl’ cards/optical links to allow background determination in phi rings • Detailed emulation shows that desired rejection (>10) can be achieved with moderate jet thresholds • sufficient up to LS2 (≈20kHz) • “SLHC upgrade”: Fully reconfigured system with higher granularity • further improved rejection for photon and single track triggers • sufficient up to ≈50kHz • Convergence of CMS-HI and CMS-pp L1 trigger needs/plans

  6. ALICE plan so far (From Andreas Slides) • 2013-14 Long Shutdown 1 (LS1) completion of TRD and CALs • 2015 Pb-Pb at /sNN = 5.1 TeV • 2016-17 Pb-Pb at /sNN = 5.5 TeV • 2018 Long Shutdown 2 (LS2): DETECTOR & LHC-Pb-lumi UPGRADE • 2019-2021: Ar-Ar, p-Pb, Pb-Pb • 2022 Long Shutdown 3 (LS3) • 2023-~2025: Pb-Pb at 5.5 TeV till 10 nb-1 + pp reference at 5.5 TeV
