High School Profile Thomas Jefferson High School in South Los Angeles • The state average graduation rate for 2009-2010 was 83.3% • The graduation rate at Thomas Jefferson High School was 54%. • Of those who graduate, the percentage who attend college is also significantly lower than the state average

What are Charter Schools? • Public schools • State funded but free of some rules and regulations in exchange for accountability (producing certain results) which are set forth in each school's charter. • Some charter schools provide a curriculum that specializes in a certain field (arts, mathematics, college prep etc.) • Some charter schools are founded by teachers, or activists who feel restricted by traditional public schools Pros and Cons

What is Head Start? • Private, non-profit early childhood intervention organization • Provides education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income children and their families. • Aim to prepare low-income children for school by providing them with the language and academic skills other children may learn at home from their parents

  17. What is Career Technical Education (also called School to Work)? A program that requires: 1) restructuring of secondary education 2) extensive involvement of businesses in preparation of youth for the work force

Obstacles • Attitude is a major barrier to the success of Student to Work efforts • Parents are often not receptive to work-based learning • Teachers may be reluctant to devote the time and effort required to learn and incorporate new ways of teaching • Parents and teachers may fear the curriculum would not have a strong enough academic basis

  21. Privatization of schools Record numbers of Americans are turning to higher education to give them a stronger edge in the job market. One of the fastest growing—and most controversial—sectors of the higher-education industry is for-profit colleges and universities.

Making College A Possible Reality • Inform parents of the college application process (includes bilingual assemblies and parent workshops that address important aspects of the college application process, such as how to apply for scholarships) • Organizing freshman field trips to local universities and community colleges • Creating cross-curricular lesson plans that promote knowledge of higher education institutions • Provide students with step by step guidance and resources regarding the college application process beginning with their freshman year

  29. The Future of Education President Obama’s plan (pre-election) to reform No Child Left Behind: • Change standardized testing. Improve the assessments used to track student progress to measure readiness for college. 2) Make college affordable to all Americans: Opportunity Tax Credit worth $4,000 in exchange for community service. It will cover two-thirds the cost of tuition at the average public college or university and make community college tuition completely free for most students. 3) Simplify the Application Process for Financial Aid: enabling families to apply for Financial Aid simply by checking a box on their tax form Eliminating the need for a separate application. Future of Education: President’s Plan Early Childhood Education • Zero to Five Plan: help states move toward voluntary, universal pre-school. • Expand Early Head Start and Head Start: Obama and Biden will quadruple Early Head Start, increase Head Start funding and improve quality for both. • Affordable, High-Quality Child Care: Obama and Biden will also provide affordable and high-quality child care to ease the burden on working families.
