Problem Detail • 400+ tools at Buhrke • Company is growing • No current reporting system • Production department un- aware of tool availability Benefits of tracking: • Ability to run history reports • Based off of history, pre-ventative maintenance can be done to reduce tool downtime • Alert system • Notify tool room when spe-cific actions need to be taken

Proposed Solutions • SQL database with VB front end application • Would require SQL server license/training • VB license for development/troubleshooting • Access database with VB front end • Complete Access application like current Buhrke database • Could use either Access with VB runtime or custom VB front end • Access database with Web front end • Platform Independent, only an HTML browser needed for clients • Access based like current database

Buhrke’s Feedback • SQL Solution • No current SQL license, prefer Access • Not many users expected at first • Access/VB Solution • No VB license available if Buhrke wanted to change code • Versions of Access differ from PC to PC • Access/Web Solution • Security might be an issue, only certain users should be able to access, currently no central-ized security at Buhrke

  7. Solution – Access/Web • Access with Web front end • Platform independency • Current IT staff knowledgeable with Access and HTML • Security issue: controlled with NTFS permissions on web server

  8. Obstacles Encountered • Current Buhrke database only runs in Access 95 • Buhrke’s business software, Vantage, has too much overhead for integration/difficult to integrate • No current complete process in place

  15. Objective • Automate the receiving system for raw materials at Buhrke Industries. • Usage of bar code scanner for… • More efficient receiving • Time saving

  16. Why? • Current receiving process is done manually. • Slower process • Slower Material availability update • Harder traceability of materials

  17. Tasks • Extensive research on various RF (Radio Frequency) and Batch scanners • Present scanners that are best suited for receiving process • Creation of Material Tag and traceability for future reference

  18. Research Methodology • Understanding manufacturing process from receiving to shipping • Research on company’s database software (Vantage) • Generation of Move Tags

  19. Critical Obstacles • Changing project definition • Incompatibility of Vantage 5.1 with barcode scanners (data transfer) • Long distance between IIT campus and Buhrke Industries (limited visits to the company)

  20. Summary • Barcode Module would add barcode capabilities to Vantage 5.1 • Batch scanners best suited for company’s need were presented • Move Tag created from Vantage
