  5. What is Accreditation? Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) Accreditation is a collegial process based on self and peer assessment for public accountability and improvement of academic quality.

MISSION: ACBSP develops, promotes, and recognizes best practices that contribute to continuous improvement of business education and accredits qualified business programs.

History Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) • ACBSP established in 1989 in Kansas City. • Focus on teaching excellence and all degree levels. • International accreditation from beginning. • August 1992 recognized by the Dept. of Education. • January 2001 was recognized by Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). • Change in philosophy, membership, and staff structure in 2003 to reflect new way of doing things.

  9. Membership Overview Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) • Currently 532 educational members and 12 corporate members. This includes over 5,400 individual members. • Educational members include 308 accredited, 155 candidates, and 69 members without accredited status. • Currently 168 associate degree institutions, 342 baccalaureate degree institutions and 22 offer and are accredited in both. • Members outside the United States total 47 in 20 countries.

Accreditation Standards Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) • Separate boards and standards for associate and baccalaureate/graduate degree programs. • Shift away from prescriptive process to continuous improvement process. • Focus upon excellence in teaching and student learning outcomes (evidence-based). • Focus upon the mission of the institution. • Based on Baldrige National Quality Program and its Criteria for Performance Excellence.

Accreditation Process Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) • Cost is about $12,000. • Timetable can be 18 – 24 months or up to 5 years. • A preliminary questionnaire is followed by a self-study followed by a site visit followed by feedback. • Ten year accreditation granted. • A Process that Supports Your Success • Use of process for regional accreditation. • A Mentor and Commissioner is provided to assist. • Copies of self-studies can be provided. • Private community of all schools in candidacy.

Support of Teaching Excellence Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) • Standards and criteria focus on teaching excellence. • Wal-mart Teaching Excellence Award for faculty. • Three affiliated honor societies for students. • Individual faculty membership at each institution. • Business Education Week sent each Friday. • Annual and regional conferences offer educational tracks with suggested practices. • Global Business Connections for faculty and student exchanges.

  15. Trends in Business Accrediting Associations Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) • Focus on member services in addition to accreditation. • Global outreach. • Membership is growing. • Executives are association managers rather than from academia.

Background A Review of ACBSP Specialized Accreditation in Accounting • Part of desire to offer new products and services to meet unmet needs. • Provide external validation of quality of accounting program as outlined earlier. • Offer benefits of accreditation outlined earlier. • One motivation is desire by NASBA to link state board decisions to accreditation agencies. • Currently offered by AACSB.

Timetable A Review of ACBSP Specialized Accreditation in Accounting • Standards adopted by baccalaureate/graduate degree membership in June 2006. • Criteria to implement standards drafted during fall and presented to Board in November. • Currently being shared for review and comment by various parties. • Proposed to be implemented by June 2007 but that date may be later in 2007 or in 2008.

Accreditation of Accounting A Review of ACBSP Specialized Accreditation in Accounting • Only baccalaureate/graduate degree programs, not associate degree programs. • Requires business accreditation and is linked. • Does not propose creation of separate board or site visit, but is integrated with current processes. • Proposed cost for concurrent with business accreditation would be about $3,400 for fees, mentor, and expenses of one site team member. About $7,000 if not concurrent.

Issues for Discussion A Review of ACBSP Specialized Accreditation in Accounting • Content of the Common Professional Component. • How the CPC for business ethics is met…with a standalone course or integrated course and related issue of who teaches the courses. • Accounting representation on ACBSP Board of Commissioners and site team visits.

  20. 2007 Annual Conference Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) • Orlando on June 29-July 2 with focus on “Connecting Business with B-Schools” • Educational tracks on the theme, teaching excellence, student chapters, and the accreditation process. • Cynthia Cooper is speaker at Opening Luncheon. • Proposal for creation of business related degree program accreditation.
