  1. Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) Culture of Evidence Presentation October 28, 2009

  2. Introduction • Culture of Evidence – Overview • Implementing a Culture of Evidence • Campus Tools – Breadth of Utilization • Feedback on Newest Tool – Student Data Query System • On the Horizon

  3. Culture of Evidence – Overview • A wide variety of data (financial, budgetary, student, human resources, etc.) is available 24x7 via online, web-based systems. • Systems are open and transparent – access to the data warehouses is NOT limited by (or restricted to) department, fund, etc. • Authorization is granted directly by departments via an online, web based system – those who “need to know” are granted access immediately.

  4. Implementing a Culture of Evidence at UCR • UCRFStotals – Financial & Budgetary Data Warehouse • Student Data Query System (SDQS) • Student Academic Advising System (SAAS) • Distribution of Payroll Exp – Payroll Data Warehouse • Human Resources Data Warehouse (HRDW) • Facilities Management System (FMS) • Course and Instruction Reporting System (CIRS) • Strategic Academic Research and Analysis (SARA) Please visit http://apb.ucr.edu/inst_plan/ for campus reports, metrics, and data sets.

  5. Breadth of Utilization – Users & Row • UCRFStotals (finance and budget warehouse) = 759 Database row count: 17.5 million • Student Data Query System (SDQS) = 266 Database row count: 26.3 million • Student Academic Advising System (SAAS) = 258 Database row count: 26.3 million • Distribution of Payroll Expense = 615 Database row count: 2.3 million • Human Resources Data Warehouse (HRDW) = 168 Database row count: 52.8 million • Facilities Management System (FMS)= 518 Database row count: 7.3 million • Course and Instruction Reporting System (CIRS) = 133 Database row count: 1.4 million

  6. Feedback – Student Data Query System “Several years ago CNAS instituted a Learning Community program called CNAS Scholars where students volunteered to take a 1 unit discussion and workshop to support their CHEM 1A class. Statistical analysis [showed that] the students who took the voluntary support activities had markedly higher grades in CHEM 1A than those who did not. Due to those results, all CHEM 1A students must now enroll in lecture, laboratory and a mandatory discussion section now receiving 5 units for the class instead of the typical 4…. It is important for Chemistry and CNAS to be able to justify the addition of the extra unit as important to the success of the CHEM 1A students. My office is generating this data since we were able to very quickly pull the grades from all sections of CHEM 1A, CHEM 1HA and CHEM 1LA (the newly separated laboratory section) [using the SDQS] to compare them to the grades students received in CHEM A [in previous years] without the extra discussion section.” Barbra Wallace Director, CNAS Undergraduate Academic Advising Center

  7. On the Horizon • Campus Data & Query System: • Examine the intersection of data from disparate sources • Web Based, pre-formatted views of information • Drill-down from graphical interface into tabular data
