In your journal… • What do you think of John Smith based on things you know about him already or from movies such as Disney’s Pocahontas? What kind of a person is he? What is he best known for?
John smith Notes • -Left England at age 16 to become a soldier for hire and occasional pirate • -Returned to England in 1605 • -His military experience made him a good leader in the eyes of the Virginia Company, the group of investors hoping for large profits from the New World venture • -He was hired in 1607 to help run the Jamestown colony
A struggle for control: jamestown • -Conflicts broke out in Jamestown almost immediately • -The first president died and the next two were deposed, colonists mutinied and deserted the colony preferring to live in the nearby woods • -Smith took control of the colony in 1608 where he says he focused on survival– the safety, shelter, and food– while leading forcefully • - “He that shall not work, shall not eat”
Maybe he’s not who he Thinks he is… • -John Smith was almost executed for the deaths of two colonists on an expedition he lead • -Mention of Pocahontas might have been a way to Smith to cash in on Pocahontas’ later fame… pg. 92 of textbook
