Intercultural Institute of Timisoara • An autonomous, non-governmental organisation, having a cultural, civic and scientific activity, without political purposes, which adheres to the values and the principles of the Council of Europe on interculturality • I.I.T. was established in 1992 with the support of the local authorities of Timisoara and of the Council of Europe.

Projects for Roma communities • Quality education of Roma children • Combating prejudice and discrimination against Roma • Empowerment of the civil society inside Roma communities and particularly support for young Roma to become involved in organizations • Projects and activities aiming at improving the situation of Roma • Improvement of the relations of Roma with public authorities • Social entrepreneurship

  4. Campaign concept • Development of a process that serves both educational and informational purposes “Students propose solutions to the problems of the Roma communities”

  5. Local Initiative Group Timisoara • Members of the Roma community • Roma NGOs and NGOs working on Roma issues • Local Youth Council • Media Institutions • County Federation for Youth • County School Inspectorate • Professors / teachers

  6. The core programme • A four month activity developed for students and teachers at high school level • A range of stakeholders involved: • educational institutions • local authorities • Roma communities • students and parents • the Media

  7. The methodology • A programme for active citizenship with students based on the following steps: • Mapping of the problems faced by Roma people in their local community • Identifying a problem that requires a public policy solution • Examining and evaluating alternative solutions • Developing a proposed public policy solution • Action plan to get the public policy adopted by the authorities

  8. Public presentations • Students publicly present their project • Local authorities and community members are invited to attend • Press releases and invitation for media to attend

  9. Main steps • Teacher trainings on the methodology and intercultural education • Implementation of the programme and monitoring • Public presentations • Media coverage throughout the process • Dissemination of project and results

  10. Advantages of using this methodology • An important number of stakeholders are involved • Different age groups • Different professional background • Different socio-economic conditions • Different institutions • It has an educational purpose, having thus a potential greater impact than information campaigns alone
