  1. The Affects of Fast Food By ~~~~~~

  2. How fast food affects the environment • In terms of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC), cooking four hamburgers releases more than driving a current model car 1000 miles. • In NJ, restaurants release more VOC than all the heavy diesel engines in the state. • Plastic straws and plastic or Styrofoam containers don't biodegrade and typically aren't recycled. • Think of that hamburger wrapper... Paper right? Wrong. Paper coated with wax and other products so it doesn't get soaked with oil. Also doesn't biodegrade, or in some cases, doesn't as biodegrade fast as normal paper. • People thought fast food was going green...

  3. How fast food affects personal health • Everyone knows fast food is high in calories and makes you grow horizontally, but did you know it is also one of the leading causes for diabetes? • Love salt on your fries? Ever thought of how much sodium that is? If you ate those fries regularly, expect some heart problems in the future. • Ever wondered what a hamburger that’s been sitting on a rack for the better part of a day tastes like? Go to McDonalds. If they aren't being stored below 41 degrees or above 135 degrees, then that is just a breeding ground for germs. You should already know about germs. • Who's cooking the food? Not chefs trained in sanitation. Teenagers who adults won't even trust with voting. Think about it. • When eating a Big Mac and fries, your body consumes almost twice as many calories as you would if you ate the same weight of pasta and salad.

  4. How fast food affects our community • You see it all the time, walking down the street you see old McDonalds bags, DQ cups and plenty of straws. This is what we call “litter.” • The litter is leaking pollutants (BPA) into the water. • It also causes problems to organisms who think it's food. • The litter also runs into our water systems and ends up at the bottom of our bay. • NO fast food container is biodegradable.

  5. What are our other options? • First of all, if your going out to eat, don't go to fast food. There are many other restaurants out there whose prices aren't much higher, but are a healthier option. • Cook at home. It saves money and is a lot healthier than greasy burgers and salty fries. • Frequently people eat fast food because it is just a quick snack, so instead, pack ahead: from granola bars to sandwiches.

  8. Famous Last Words Heard in Fast Food Joints • "For here or to go?" (McDonald's employee, over the drive-thru speaker) • "Because you're the only one who knows how to make the food." (Taco Bell) • "The cook only knows how to make scrambled eggs." (Steak n Shake waitress) • "It's not very good." (McDonald's employee, when handing me an ice cream cone through the drive-thru) • "They're running a little late and they haven't turned on the grill yet." (Burger King at 11:15am on a Thursday) • "Don't eat here." (Said in a hushed voice by a Jack in the Box employee over the drive-thru speaker)
