  1. Austin ISDEastside Numeracy Plan Talking Points: 10/11/10 AISD Department of Mathematics

  2. AISD Numeracy Committee Numeracy Definition 2010 Numeracy is an aggregation of beliefs and dispositions, habits of mind, communication, capabilities, and problem solving skills that people need in order to engage effectively and autonomously in quantitative situations arising in life and work.

  3. Austin ISD Numeracy Plan Theory of Action 2010: • If we create mathematically literate classroom cultures by using real-life connections to encourage inquiry, reasoning, communication, and problem solving, then students will develop/acquire the beliefs, dispositions and habits of mind that lead to academic and career success.

  4. Eastside Numeracy Plan Given: • Eastside mathematics data • High number of mathematical gaps, misconceptions, and a lack of numeracy • Lack of rigorous and relevant PK -12 mathematics teaching and learning • Lack of student engagement • Lack of numeracy alignment (PK-12, English & Spanish) in resources

  5. Research Correlation between numeracy and academic success: • QUANTITATIVE LITERACY: Why Numeracy Matters for Schools and Colleges • MATHEMATICS and DEMOCRACY: The Case for Quantitative Literacy • National Numeracy Network • RtI Mathematics National Math site

  6. Therefore The Office of Academics has developed a Literacy Plan / East-Austin Schools Plan which includes specific strategies and structures to support improved instruction in numeracy for all students. This plan is designed around an aligned framework comprised of Curriculum & Assessment, Professional Development, and Instructional Practices in grades PreK–12.

  7. Eastside Numeracy Goals • Develop numeracy curriculum and assessments to support each and every student. • Provide teachers with concrete strategies and resources to support targeted instruction to meet the needs of struggling learners (Tier II or Tier III). • Support the implementation of a school-wide focus on numeracy in the context of a comprehensive literacy program. • Increase professional development opportunities on specific strategies and structures to promote numeracy.
