  3. Ionic Compounds All ionic compounds are defined as the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged particles. The (+) ion called the cationand the (-) ion called the anion. Two types of ionic compounds: Binary Ionic Compounds Ternary Ionic Compounds

  4. Ionic Compounds Constants for ALL ionic compounds: • cations or (+) ions are ALWAYS written first. 2. Net charge of any ionic compound MUST be ZERO. The positive and negative must be equal in number and cancel each out.

  7. Binary Ionic Compounds How do you write a binary ionic compound. • Identify the cation (+) and the anion (-). • Assign the oxidation number. • Criss Cross the numerical charge NOT the charge itself. • Simplify and ensure that the net charge is equal to zero.

  11. Naming Binary Ionic Compounds The first name is the name of the metal (+) ion. NOTE: For ALL transitional metals you MUST include a Roman Numeral with the name. The second name is the name of the anion which drops the ending and adds –ide. NOTE: Use a reverse Criss Cross to assign oxidation numbers in most compounds. CAUTION

  13. Ternary Ionic Compounds Ternary compounds are made-up of at least one polyatomic ion. Note: You MUST know your polyatomic ions. Constant: • Net charge must equal zero • More than one polyatomic ion MUST be in parenthesis.

  14. Ternary Ionic Compounds Steps to write a ternary ionic compound: 1. Determine the cation (+) and the anion (-). 2. Assign the oxidation numbers 3. Criss cross numerical values. 4. Simplify and ensure net charge of zero. 5. More than one poly, put in ( ).

Note: If the first ion is a polyatomic ion, then the name is the name of the poly ion. Second name is the name of the polyatomic ion. Note: If the second name is monoatomic, then drop the ending and add –ide.
