  1. HYDROPOWER AND NATURAL GAS Marissa Pearson and Joshua Lewis

  2. Hydropower Hydropower is used to create electricity by falling water. 1.The fast moving water acts like a generator generating electricity.

  3. Is it renewable or nonrenewable? • Hydropower is renewable because water is constantly flowing and going through the water cycle.

  4. HOW LONG HAVE HUMANS USED THIS • Thousands of years water wheels provided electric energy for factories.

  5. Advantages and Disadvantages Advantages Disadvantages • Little pollution • Renewable • Inexpensive • Reduces the need for fossil fuels • When in use it doesn’t produce green house gases • The dams create erosion problems • Destroy natural environments • Disrupts migratory paths of salmon and steel heads • Decrease in water quality • There is an earthquake vulnerability

  6. How is it used today • This energy form is used in present day as a source of energy that generates electricty.

  7. NATURAL GAS

  8. How is it used to produce electricity The natural gas is burned to create electricity

  9. Is it renewable or nonrenewable • Natural gas is a nonrenewable source because it cannot be replaced. • Fossil fuels can’t be replaced because when they are all gone there is no coming back because the animals are extinct.

  10. How long have humans used this • The ancient people of Greece, Persia, and India discovered natural gas and were mystified by it • About 2,500 years ago the Chinese realized it could be put to work • Natural gas was first used to illuminate the streets of Baltimore with gas lamps in 1816 in America. • By 1900 natural gas has been used in 17 states • In the past 40 years the use has grown

  11. Advantages and Disadvantages Advantages Disadvantages • An advantage would be it can fuel your car • Natural gas gives you heat • It can generate electric power • Natural gas is also used for cooking • It can also be used to generate electricity • Natural gas is flammable • It is explosive • Contaminates drinking water • Creates cavities in the Earth • Natural gas also causes gas leaks

  12. How is it used today • Natural gas is used for cooking • Heating • Generate electricity • Car fuel • Cooling
