  5. Plate Tectonics (tehk-THAN-ihks) Plate tectonics explains how the earth has evolved over time. It explains the formation, movements, collision and destruction of the earth’s crust.

  6. The theory states that Earth's outermost layer, the lithosphere, is broken into 7 large, rigid pieces called plates. • Pacific Plate • North American • South American • Eurasian • Indian • African • Antarctic

  7. Plates move at different speeds and in different directions. • Some small plates that lack landmasses move as much as several cm per year. • Large plates move only a few cm per year.

  8. Plate Boundaries In few cases, the edges of the continents are boundaries of plates. However, most of the boundaries are on the ocean floor.

  9. There are 3 types of plate boundaries: Convergent Divergent Strike-Slip

  10. Divergent Plate Boundaries • Occur at mid-ocean ridge • Also known as CONSTRUCTIVE BOUNDARIES

  14. Strike-Slip Boundary • Two plates grind together and slip past each other horizontally • No new plate material is made and no plate material is destroyed; thus, it is also known as CONSTRUCTIVE BOUNDARY
