  1. Francisco Caldeira Instituto Nacional de Estatística GeoInformation Unit Strategies for Geographical information Web dissemination in the Statistics Portugal Portal

  2. Topics • Portuguese Small statistical areas • Geographical information in the statistical Portal • MapServices experience

  3. Portuguese Small statistical areas

  4. Small statistical areas • Administrative levels • District • Municipality • Parish • Statistical levels • Secção • Subsecção Census 2001 Geographical information District Municipality Parish

  5. Small Statistical areas– Census 2001 - Two levels of small statistical areas – Division of parish Secções and Subsecções Estatísticas • SECÇÃO ESTATÍSTICA continuous area of a single parish + - 300 households • SUBSECÇÃO ESTATÍSTICA The smallest homogeneous area for construction or not, within the secção: • blocks in urban areas • all or part of a village in rural areas • Residual areas

  6. Small statistical areas

  7. Small statistical areas Urban areaLisbon downtown

  8. Small statistical areas examples Rural area

  9. The evolution of the small statistical areas through thecensus

  10. Small statistical areas • BuildingsOn the census 2001 for the NUTS II of Alentejo* the enumerators marked on the census maps the position and code number of the buildings About 400 000 buildings were identified in 2001The 2011 Census will identify about 4 000 000 and cover 100% of the country *1/3 of the Portugal surface

  11. Small statistical areas • 2001 census map

  12. Small statistical areas • 2001 Census Buildings for the city of Évora

  13. Small statistical areas • Population Grid (1 Km)

  14. Small statistical areas Census 2001 Geographical information • Several large collections of: • Images • More than 4 000 images • Municipality maps • 1:1 000, up to 1:5 000 scales • Army topographic maps • 1:25 000 scale

  15. Small statistical areas Census 2001 Geographical information – The challenge • How to publish this data on the web? • Is there anyway to link GIS and the statistical indicators database to produce thematic maps? • What is the more efficient way for downloading the geographic information?

  16. 2. Geographical information in the statistical Portal

  17. Geographical information in the statistical Portal About the Portal (inproduction in June 2007) • Web application that Focus on the user needs of statistical information • Access to information is universal, free and without registration needed • Among the tools available on the website stands out the statistical database, a dynamic database that supports more than a thousand indicators, and it’s on permanent updating

  18. Geographical information in the statistical Portal About the Portal (inproduction in June 2007) • Change tables, save and export • Metadata • on-line Surveys • Subscribe RSS * to receive alerts and updates on data • … And of course MAPS • http://www.ine.pt *Really simple sindication

  19. Geographical information in the statistical Portal Census 2001 Geographical information – The Strategy • Follow the K.I.S.S. rule (Keep it simple) • Visualization, MapServices and point editing use ArcIms or Map Server • Advanced Editing (polygons, lines), complex database operations (link the Statistical and GIS dabase) ArGisServer

  20. Geographical information in the statistical Portal • Territorial Structure • Major goal -> Browse ALL the data • Includes some statistical information • Make a selection or Identify the population, number of families and households for each layer and export it to xls excel format • Technology • ArcIms • In production • http://sig.ine.pt Visualization page

  21. Visualization page

  22. Geographical information in the statistical Portal • Thematic Maps • Major goal -> Produce thematic maps with the statistical indicators of the portal • The portal identifies if a Statistical indicator has a spatial representation. • The ArcGisServer application creates the map “on-the-fly” • Some features: • The user can customize the maps, i.e. change the number of classes, colors, the calculation method, breakdown the level Thematic Map page

  23. Geographical information in the statistical Portal • Linking the GIS and the Statistical databases • The application receives from the portal a set of parameters that include Statistical indicator code, time reference and spatial reference • http://maps.ine.pt/MapsPortal/default.aspx?VAR_CD=0000387&V_DIM_1=S7A2007&NIVEL=3&LINGUA=EN • with the parameters a search is carried out to the Statistical database • Perform a virtual join on the geographical layer with the result of the search Thematic Map page

  24. Geographical information in the statistical Portal • Technology • ArcGisServer • In production • http://www.ine.pt Thematic Map page

  25. Geographical information in the statistical Portal • Download Page • Major goal -> Allow the download of subsecções • Not a simple download link • Most of the requests are for small areas like district, parish • To avoid unnecessary traffic the user could select on the map what he wants or make a selection by attributes • Technology • ArcGisServer • Format -> Zipped shapefile including metadata • Not in production Download page

  26. Geographical information in the statistical Portal Donwload page

  27. 3.Map Services experience

  28. Map Services • A web map service is a standard protocol for serving georeferenced map images over the Internet or LAN that are generated by a map server using data from a GIS database • On the client side, these services can be used to access maps and GIS data through internet via desktop GIS or and application Definition

  29. Map Services Definition

  30. Map Services Advantages of Map services • Security • The user only has access to a snapshot of the data • Performance • Delivering a small image (size on disk) , they are fast and easy to use… • Visualization of the data • The map service enables the access to the content of a map document – Defines symbology, scale ranges … • Can be easily used or view in a Web Application, or desktop GIS including most of the open source Gis applications
