  1. 2014 SATs

  2. What are SATs tests? • SATs (Statutory Assessment Tests) is the name used to refer to the end of Key Stage National Curriculum Assessments. • All children in Y2 and Y6 are required to take the tests. • SATs test children on anything they’ve learnt during the past 4 years of their education in Maths and Literacy. • Children in year 6 take the tests on the same day and in the same order across the country. • SATs are sent away to be marked by teachers and other members of staff from other schools.

  3. Why do schools use SATs? • They are a legal requirement. • SATs levels provide part of a useful overview of learning to pass on to secondary schools. • They are shared alongside comments, marking and levels that a teacher has produced, based on the child’s work throughout the term. • Teachers find out what children currently know and what they have learnt in lots of different ways: marking work, asking questions in class, watching groups work together, and some tests (SATs).

  4. Changes • Once again, this year there will be no writing tests. The levels will be given by us using teacher assessments based on the writing over the year, during assessments, literacy lessons and other writing tasks. • In place of writing assessments, there is now a spelling, grammar and punctuation test.

  5. Timetable Mon 12th May – Reading (Level 3-5 & level 6) Tue 13th May – Spelling, punctuation and grammar (Level 3-5 & level 6) Wed 14th May– Maths Paper 1 (no calculator) Mental maths Thurs 15th May– Maths Paper 2 (no calculator) (Level 3-5 & level 6)

  6. How Parents Can Help • Try and keep as normal a routine as possible and increase confidence and organisation of children! • Bringing a water bottle and a healthy snack to school for break time, like a banana. • Ensure plenty of time to get to school, being late will only make you and the teachers worry. • Children will be provided with everything they need to complete the test. • Inform us of any illnesses or problems ASAP. There is always something that we can do to allow your child to access the test, such as completing it in a different room. Everyone will do the test.

  7. During the Tests • The test papers will be delivered to the classroom just before the start time. • The class teacher reads through instructions with the children and goes through class rules and asks for any questions. • We will give reminders of time remaining throughout each test. • Pupils must remain in test conditions until papers are collected; this means no pupils can talk at all until the papers have left the room. • The test papers will be collected from the classrooms once we have finished.

  8. Rest of the Week • Same as normal – maths, literacy, swimming, PE, games, art, golden time, assemblies etc.

  9. When are results released? • The school aims to inform you as soon as we are given the results. • You will receive them as part of your child’s final report.
