Academy Expectations At River Gate (and everywhere you go) you will: • Respond to people with a “Yes ma’am/yes sir” or a “Yes, Mrs._____/Yes, Mr._______.” • Greet every adult by name if you know it and say, “Good Morning” or “Have a Great Day!” when you talk to him/her. • Make eye contact when people talk. In class you will keep your eyes on the person speaking at all times. This includes other students. • Have excellent manners in the hallway. No talking at all. When someone needs to get through the line, you will let him/her through. Pay attention and be aware of the needs of those around you. • Have excellent manners in the cafeteria. You will speak courteously to all cafeteria staff, and you will eat your lunch with restaurant manners. Fifth grade lunch will be a pleasant environment for everyone who enters the cafeteria. • Behave courteously as you move around the building. When you walk through doors, you will let those coming OUT of a place come OUT before you go in.

  8. 5th Grade Math • Daily Problem Solving • Place Value – Multiplication and Division • FRACTIONS!!! • Geometry – Just a little! • Measurement – Some. • Algebra – Some • Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying, and Dividing WITH decimals!

Math Investigations… • Makes all mathematic topics accessible for all students • Uses concrete mathematical manipulative objects as a natural part of instruction • Treats problem solving as the primary purpose of mathematics • Assigns fewer computational exercises and more problems that require higher-order thinking for all students

  10. Math Investigations…continued • Asks students to justify and explain their thinking • Incorporates group learning experiences into many lessons • Uses different types of formal and informal assessment

  11. 5th Grade Reading • Balanced Literacy – 4 Basic Parts: • Independent Reading • Guided Reading • Writing • Word Work • Read at home EVERY night to build stamina, vocabulary, fluency and love of reading. • Read to your child! Talk about what you read!

  12. Writing Lab We will work hard to make sure your child can write proficiently in cursive this year in the writing lab. In addition, we will work on writing though each of the four content areas: Language Arts, Math, Social Studies, and Science. At home – make sure written responses to questions are in complete sentences. Proofread for periods and capitals. Make your child correct his/her work. Let him/her know that good grammar is important to you!

  13. Science Through hands-on exploration and discussion, students will investigate the following topics: • Force and Motion • Matter • Heat Transfer • Weather • Ecosystems • Body Systems • Genetics and Heredity Students will attend classes in the science lab each week. Use Study Island!

  14. Social Studies Students answer these essential questions as they work through the social studies curriculum:

  15. Health RHASE (Reproductive Health and Safety Education is a K-12 Health Education Program. The RHASE Program will consist of in class discussionsand videos which cover puberty and basic social and health-related issues surrounding pre-adolescent development. The curriculum can be found on the CMS web site. Parent permission is by default. If you do not wish to have your child participate, you must sign a form saying so.

  16. Homework • 30 min of nightly reading, must be recorded on reading log and signed by a parent nightly. • Language Arts • Word Study – Spelling/Vocabulary • Specific Skills • Math – nightly assignment • Science – small assignment each week; contract due at the end of two week period.

  17. Accountability Students will receive a mid-term grading report at the mid-way point of each nine week grading period. Students will receive a report card at the end of the nine week grading period.

  18. Accountability…continued In 5th grade, students will take the North Carolina End-of-Grade Tests in the following areas: • Math • Reading • Science • Social Studies (Local Summative Assessment)

  19. Grading Scale 93-100=A 85-92=B 77-84=C 70-76=D 69 and below=F All grades are available via Parent Assist.

  20. 5th Grade Behavior Plan • Use of Agendas •  = Great Day! Way to go! • 1 = Warning • 2 = Note + Consequence • 3 = Note + double consequence + phone call or email • Severe behavior issues will be handled by administration • Please remember to sign your child’s agenda nightly!
