  1. Pulmonary System

  2. Anatomical Structures • Nasal passage • Oral cavity • Pharnyx • Larynx • Trachea • Bronchi • Bronchioles • Alveoli • Capillaries

  3. Functions • Ventilation • Mechanics of moving air in and out of the lungs • Respiration • Exchanges O2 and CO2

  4. Functions • Ventilation • Exhalation or Expiration • Occurs passively • Control of breathing: medulla • Inspiration muscles: C3-C5 nerve root

  5. Function • Ventilation • Inhalation or Inspiration • Requires active muscle contraction • Diaphragm (key muscle) • External intercostal • Accessory muscles • Abdominals • Sternocleidomastoids • Scalenes • Trapezius

  6. Functions • Following air (Inspiration) • Enters through nasal passage • Passes though pharynx • Larynx • Trachea • Trachea branches to form R and L bronchi • Bronchi branch into bronchioles • Bronchioles terminate into alveoli

  7. Functions • Respiration • Alveoli surrounded by network of thin walled capillaries • Gas exchange occurs across the thin walls of capillaries and alveoli • Gas exchange (O2 and CO2)

  8. Function • Expiration • Air moves back thru pulmonary system to be exhaled
