Do you think it is a good thing or a bad thing? Explain why? • Do countries today have a right to act imperialistically toward other countries?

  5. Imperialism • Imperialism: the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies. How does this picture represent Imperialism?

  6. Review on Imperialism • When did Imperialism mostly occur? • What countries were the imperialists? • Which countries were the colonies (the smaller countries that get taken over)? • Why did Imperialism occur?

  7. Imperialism: late 1800-early 1900s. Mostly European countries to smaller countries like in Africa, India, and Asia What countries are the driving forces?

  8. Why did Imperialism Occur? • Economic Reasons: • To create new markets for products, acquire raw materials, and cheap labor, and control foreign trade What was going on in Europe at this time that European countries need new markets and raw resources?

Colonial Independence Jig-Saw • In groups, you will become experts on how a specific country or region gained Independence from their imperialist leader. • Steps 1: Read the information about your country/region • Step 2: Brainstorm with your groups about how you want to answer the questions • Step 3: Create a poster that captures all the elements I ask for. • Step 4: Present the poster to your classmates so that they can acquire the knowledge.

  10. Group Roles • 1.) Chief Investigator: This person will be primarily in charge with reading the document. • 2.) Main Analyzer: This person figures out what to include on the poster. • 3.) Head Writer: This person will be in charge of writing everything down on the poster. • 4.) Professor: This person will be in charge of presenting the information attained to the class.

  11. Parts to include in your poster • 1.) Provide the name of the country that became independent, the date they did, and which country they gained their independence from. • 2.) Explain Why they wanted to gain independence (this should be a brief summary on the poster) • 3.) Summary on how they gained independence—thisshould include who was the main leader in the Independence movement • 4.) Effects or results of gaining independence—this can be done in bullet points. • 5.) A visual that captures the information you are presenting.

Haiti Achieved independence: from France, 1804 Key leader: Toussaint L’Ouverture, a formerly enslaved African, was a self-taught leader Ideology: Enslaved Africans—the overwhelming majority of the population—should rebel to gain their own freedom and independence for their nation. • Haiti became the first black republic in the world, and the second nation—after the United States—to win independence from colonial rule.

South America Achieved independence: from Spain by 14 nations, 1809–1825 Key leader: Simón Bolívar, a creole—a Spaniard born in South America; this highly educated class produced many revolutionary leaders Ideology: Military power will liberate South America from unjust rule by Europe. The military leadership of Bolívar and fellow general José de San Martín defeated Spanish troops in a series of decisive battles. • Simon Bolivar “the Liberator”

China • Achieved independence: from the Qing Dynasty (a military empire), 1911 • Key leader: Sun-YatSen, attended school in Hawaii, where he learned about western government and economics and came to admire Abraham Lincoln. • Ideology: Three Principles of the People, which translate roughly to freedom from imperialism; a government based on a constitution by the people; and a healthy • economy to provide for the people . • Sun-YatSen became the first president of the republic of China. • Sun-Yat Sent

India Achieved independence: from Great Britain, 1947 Key leader: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a Hindu like the majority of Indians, was greatly respected as a leader because of his deep religious faith. Ideology: civil disobedience—the choice to disobey an unjust law, in public and in a spirit of nonviolence • India took back control from the British in a series of steps, beginning in 1919.
