  1. DIMES Diapycnal and Isopycnal Mixing Experiment In the Southern Ocean

DIMES Science Plan PF (Color) SAF Tracer and 150 floats released between the Subantarctic front (SAF) and Polar Front (PF) around 110 W, on g = 27.9, about 1300 m depth to measure Kz and to study isopycnal dispersion and eddy fluxes over smooth Pacific topography and rough Scotia Sea topography. Tracer and 75 isopycnal RAFOS floats will be deployed in 2009, 75 more floats in 2010. Microstructure and fine structure measured with profilers in the Pacific, in 2010, and in the Scotia Sea, in 2011 and 2012, and fine structure measured with EM-APEX floats and Shearmeters, will extend estimates of Kz to the whole water column, and will reveal the energy sources for diapycnal mixing. A mooring array in the Scotia Sea will study the transfer of energy from mesoscale eddies to internal waves and to dissipation. Forward models, inverse models, process study models, and satellite remote sensing will help to interpret the experiment.

Modeling Studies Modeling Activities associated with DIMES (planned or underway): George Nurser and David Smeed (NOC) - High-resolution studies of the generation of internal waves by flows over topography, with a view to developing new diapycnal mixing parameterizations. Emily Shuckburgh (BAS) - Study of effective isopycnal diffusivities in OCCAM. Dave Stevens (UEA) - Tracer release simulations; studies of effective diffusivities and spice in OCCAM. Andy Thompson (DAMTP, Cambridge) - Process studies on the role of mesoscale eddies and topography in jet formation on the ACC, using idealized 2-layer and 3-dimensional quasi-geostrophic models. Alexa Griesel, Julie McClean, Mat Maltrud, Joe LaCasce, Sarah Gille, Janet Sprintall, POP Analysis for Eulerian and Lagrangian effective diffusivities. Jen MacKinnon, Internal lee waves process studies (NICKELS). Others welcome, but coordination encouraged.

  6. Data Distribution Major commitment from BODC for DIMES data Web site in place in U.S. http://dimes.ucsd.edu, with modest funding for data management from NSF. Will abide by NSF rules on making data public through these sites.
