  2. Step 1: Write an Attention Getter Use a startling or interrogative sentence to get the attention of the audience.

  3. Step 2: State Your Thesis Start with… • It is my belief that… • In my opinion… • ____ should/should not happen because… • We should/should not… • Tell your audience your position on the matter in a quick, to-the-point sentence. Be firm yet polite.

  4. Support Your Idea with Details • You need at least 3 paragraphs with supporting details. Add facts, opinions, or anecdotes to make them interesting and believable.

  5. Use a Rebuttal • Think about an argument your opponent would make, then rebut it! This isn’t necessary, but it makes your essay more exciting.

  6. Write a Conclusion • Write a final paragraph that sums up your position and leaves an impression on the audience. Incorporate a bigger theme. Still confused? Go back and read it over one more time!
