  2. What is the PDC Co.? • PDC is a design and construction firm. • It builds mainly bridges on a large scale. • It employs a team of 21 Architects, Engineers, Construction Experts, and Labourers.

Why have you been chosen? • Over the past 4 weeks our CEO has been watching and evaluating your performance on many smaller design and engineering tasks. • You have been chosen because: • You have a solid understanding of how forces act on structures. • You display creativity in your solutions to engineering problems. • You work well with others and have leadership potential. • You display determination in completing at task to the best of your ability.

  4. The distance you must span … 50 cm 820 cm

  5. Your First Job … • Over the weekend. Come up with a concept drawing of a bridge. • Look at the terrain. • Remember you are limited in your materials.

  6. What are you building? • This is the Millau Viaduct – The longest Bridge in the world.

  7. We are going to break the World Record • The Millau Viaduct is 343m tall and over 2.4 km long. • We will build a model of a bridge that is 350 m tall and over 2.6km long. • And we will build it in the portable.

  8. Materials … • We are limited in materials. Our CEO has acquired a supply of the following to do the job. This is all we have.

  9. Why … • There is no science test for our unit on structures. You will be evaluated on your understanding of “forces on structures” by completing this huge task. • You cannot have success alone. You will have to lean on everyone to have success as a group. • A test would be easier … but what is the point in doing something easy.

  10. This weekend … • All of this information is on our website. • Use it to do you own inquiry into your task. • Think Abouts … • What is the task? • What do you have to do to accomplish the task? • Design a bridge using the planning page on the website. Be prepared to share your ideas with the group.

  11. Next Week … • Team Design work begins. • Hiring of employees. • Delegation of Tasks. • Learning about “Modular Structures” • The timeline is established.
