  2. Intro O.T. accounts are recorded for our example and learning Rom. 15:4 4. For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. • The Scriptures provide examples of faith and weakness so • that we might learn from them • II Kings 5:1-14: The account of Naaman the leper, a Syrian officer who needed help! • Naaman made some mistakes in dealing with God in • search of a cure for leprosy! • Mistakes that are commonly made by people today! Naaman’s search for a cure to his leprosy still serves as example to people today! Naaman's Cure For Leprosy

  3. Naaman the Leper II Kings 5:1-5 1. Now Naaman, captain of the army of the king of Aram, was a great man with his master, and highly respected, because by him the LORD had given victory to Aram. The man was also a valiant warrior, but he was a leper. 2. Now the Arameans had gone out in bands and had taken captive a little girl from the land of Israel; and she waited on Naaman's wife. 3. She said to her mistress, "I wish that my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria! Then he would cure him of his leprosy." 4. Naaman went in and told his master, saying, "Thus and thus spoke the girl who is from the land of Israel." 5. Then the king of Aram said, "Go now, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel." He departed and took with him ten talents of silver and six thousand shekels of gold and ten changes of clothes. • But with all his valor and honor, he was a leper, which • meant he was doomed to die! • His Israelite captive said a few words that made a commotion in two kingdoms! • God honored her faith by doing for Naaman, the idolater, what he had not done for any in Israel! (Lk. 4:27) Naaman's Cure For Leprosy

  4. Naaman the Leper • Naaman was a leper; a disease that only • God could cure! • A chronic, slowly progressing, mildly infectious disease, marked by destruction of tissue (Webster’s College Dictionary). • Their tissue rots (wastes away) from the inside till death! “Walking Dead!” • Today: People are lost in sin; a condition that only God • can cure, by the blood of Christ! • Rom. 3:23 • Rom. 6:23 Eph. 2:1-2 1. And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, 2. in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. “Walking Dead!” Naaman and people of today have one thing in common: A condition that only God provides the cure for! 5. Naaman’sPrideful Mistakes II Kings 5:6-7 6. He brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying, "And now as this letter comes to you, behold, I have sent Naaman my servant to you, that you may cure him of his leprosy." 7. When the king of Israel read the letter, he tore his clothes and said, "Am I God, to kill and to make alive, that this man is sending word to me to cure a man of his leprosy? But consider now, and see how he is seeking a quarrel against me." • Naaman went to the wrong man for help! • II Kings 5:6-7: He took the letter asking for a cure to the king of Israel • Today: Many people go to various other people instead of • going to Christ! • Jn. 14:6: Jesus is the only way to get to the Father! • People have gone to the wisdom of men: to Buddha, to Gandhi, Mohammed, Joseph Smith, and various other false teachers. Jn. 14:6 6. Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. Naaman's Cure For Leprosy

  6. Naaman’sPrideful Mistakes II Kings 5:10 10. Elisha sent a messenger to him, saying, "Go and wash in the Jordan seven times, and your flesh will be restored to you and you will be clean." • Naaman’scleansing was conditional! • II Kings 5:10: Naaman had to follow the instructions of the Lord to be cleansed • Today: People still must obey God to be forgiven of their • sins! • Heb. 5:9: Christ is the source of salvation to those who obey Him! • Mt. 7:21: Not all those that call upon the Lord will be saved, if they have not obeyed Him according to His word. • Still there are those who claim to be God’s but do not obey Him Heb. 5:9 9. And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation, Naaman's Cure For Leprosy

  7. Naaman’sPrideful Mistakes II Kings 5:11 11. But Naaman was furious and went away and said, "Behold, I thought, 'He will surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper.' • Naaman became angry – Naaman’s second “disease” • was pride! • II Kings 5:11: Naaman didn’t like what he heard! • Today: Many people become angry when they hear the • truth of God’s word because it doesn’t fit with what they • have been taught to accept! • Unwilling to accept baptism – Acts 2:38; 22:16 • Unwilling to accept there is only one church – Mt. 16:18; Eph. 1:22-23; 4:4-6 Eph. 4:4-6 4. There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; 5. one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6. one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. 8. Naaman’sPrideful Mistakes II Kings 5:11 11. But Naaman was furious and went away and said, "Behold, I thought, 'He will surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper.' • Naaman wanted his way! • II Kings 5:11: He had it all figured out how it should be done! • Today: Many people want to be saved according to their • ways and plans! • Faith only – Js. 2:24: Faith without works is dead. • Attending church of their choice – Mt. 16:18; Eph. 5:23: Christ built one! • By doing nothing – Eph. 2:10; I Cor. 15:58: We are created for good works! Js. 2:24 24. You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone. Naaman's Cure For Leprosy

  9. Naaman’sPrideful Mistakes II Kings 5:12 11. But Naaman was furious and went away and said, "Behold, I thought, 'He will surely come out to me and stand and call on the name of the LORD his God, and wave his hand over the place and cure the leper.' • Naaman wanted to substitute! • II Kings 5:12: He wanted to substitute the rivers of Damascus for the Jordan River! • Today: Many think they can be saved by substituting • earthly things for things of God! • Human creeds for the Bible! (II Tim. 3:16-17; Jude 3) • Denominationalism for the Lord’s church! (Mt. 15:13; 16:18) Mt. 15:13 13. But He answered and said, "Every plant which My heavenly Father did not plant shall be uprooted. Naaman made mistakes in dealing with God that many people still make today! Naaman's Cure For Leprosy

  10. Naaman’s Cure For Leprosy II Kings 5:14 14. So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child and he was clean. Naaman’s cure for leprosy: Obedience to God! • Here is an excellent illustration of the gospel of grace! • He was an enemy of God (Rom. 5:6-10), being the captain of the Syrian army. • His condition was helpless and hopeless, since he was a leper. • Being a Gentile, he was a stranger to the promises and covenants of God and had no claim on His blessing (Eph. 2:11-12). • Naaman had to humble himself and obey the word of the Lord • Then he was cleansed! Naaman's Cure For Leprosy

  11. Naaman’s Cure For Leprosy II Kings 5:14 14. So he went down and dipped himself seven times in the Jordan, according to the word of the man of God; and his flesh was restored like the flesh of a little child and he was clean. • Today:No one can be saved until they believe God and • render obedience to His will! • Hearing – Rom. 10:17 • Believing – Jn. 8:24 • Repenting – Lk. 13:3; Acts 2:38 • Confession – Acts 8:37; Rom. 10:10 • Baptism – Mk. 16:16; Acts 2:38; 22:16 Man’s way for salvation will lead to destruction – Must obey God His way to be saved! Naaman's Cure For Leprosy

  12. Conclusion • The mistakes Naaman made are very common in the • religious world today • No substitutes will be accepted – II Jn. 9-11 • Man’s way will not prevail, and is sinful – Rom. 5:6-10 • Man must obey God and remain obedient to His word – Heb. 5:9 • As Naaman was doomed if he refused to obey, so are • those who do not obey the gospel! • II Thess. 1:7-9: No excuses for not knowing God and not obeying Him! The result: Eternal separation from God! Don’t make the same mistakes Naaman made, but learn from his example that obedience to God leads to the cure of a disease that only God can cure!
