What is Computer-Based Training? • Definition (according to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst): “The training that occurs solely on the computer with individuals interacting with a computer program to learn a given concept or training course.” • Simply stated, computer-based training (CBT) is training that is done at a computer instead of in a classroom or by reading a book. In fact, you’re doing a CBT right now!

  3. Why am I Doing a CBT? • Because you are a new employee for DHHS, Behavioral and Developmental Services, there are certain things you must know in order to fulfill the duties of your job. CBTs are the most efficient way to get you that knowledge – when you need it and where you need it.

  4. Where Do I Get CBTs? • Most of the CBTs that you will use will be accessed from an internet website. You will not need a CD or a special program to run them. The same website you accessed THIS lesson from is where you will get your future computer-based training.

  6. What Types of CBTs are There? • You will see four types of CBTs. They are: • Show Me • Teach Me • Let Me Try • Test Me

  7. The “Show Me” CBT • A “Show Me” CBT walks you through a lesson and you must click the SHOW ME ( ) button to view the correct action. All actions are actually performed by the computer, you can just sit back and watch.

  8. The “Teach Me” CBT • The “Teach Me” CBT walks you through a lesson and instead of the computer performing the actions, you get prompted to perform the actions yourself. Don’t worry though, an incorrect action will prompt the CBT to jump in and ask…

  9. The “Teach Me” CBT, continued • If you choose to have the computer show you the proper action, you can then practice yourself or choose to skip practicing and continue.

  10. The “Let Me Try” CBT • A “Let Me Try” CBT gives you prompts to perform the necessary actions, without actually letting you know the exact action. If you do not perform the correct action, you will get two levels of feedback to help you perform the correct action…

  11. The “Let Me Try” CBT, continued • If after your third attempt to perform the action, you still don’t quite get it right, the CBT will ask you (just like in a “Teach Me” CBT)… • You then continue and the CBT will cycle through all prompts and feedbacks again (if necessary).

  12. The “Test Me” CBT • The “Test Me” CBT is exactly that, you are tested on performing the actions that you got to practice in the other three types of CBTs. Prompts offer just enough information to get the task done and there is no feedback. You must get all steps correct in order to “pass” a “Test Me” CBT.

  13. The “Test Me” CBT, continued • If you make a mistake in a “Test Me” CBT, you will get the following message… • To pass a “Test Me” CBT you’ll have to start it over from the beginning.

  14. In What Order Do I Do CBTs? • The order of the CBTs is arranged according to content. However, each lesson has four parts (Show Me, Teach Me, Let Me Try and Test Me). It is recommended that you take the parts in that order. However, you are only required to take and pass the “Test Me” part of each lesson.

  15. What’s Common for Each CBT? • Each EIS CBT has: • A scenario when it is first opened • A navigation bar at the bottom • A summary at the end

  16. The Opening Scenario • The opening scenario is used to set up the lesson that follows. It is basically a short description of the lesson.

  17. The Navigation Bar • The navigation bar appears on all screens of all CBTs. • Depending upon the type of CBT you are in, some options may not be available (explained in a moment).

  18. The Navigation Bar, continued • The first item on the navigation bar is the HELP button. Click it to: • Review the SCENARIO • View DIRECTIONS on how to use the CBT type • See some basic information on thesoftware used to create it (FIREFLY)

  19. The Navigation Bar, continued • The next item on the navigation bar is the title. • The first part tells you what TYPE of CBT you are in (example: “Test Me”). • The second part tells you the CONTENT of the CBT (example: “Searching for People in EIS”).

The Navigation Bar, continued • The next items on the navigation bar are the Previous and Next buttons. • PREVIOUS – allows you to go back one screen at a time to review past screens. • NEXT – allows you to skip forward one screen at a time. • NOTE: Previous or Next buttons are NOT available in a “Test Me” type of CBT.

  21. The Navigation Bar, continued • The next item on the navigation bar is the sound button. • CBTs are NOT currently equipped with sound, so you will not see this item.

  22. The Navigation Bar, continued • The next item on the navigation bar is the Show Me button. • Click the SHOW ME button in any type of CBT to see the correct action performed. • NOTE: This button is not available in a “Test Me” type of CBT.

  23. The Navigation Bar, continued • The last item on the navigation bar is the Close button. • Click the CLOSE button in any type of CBT to exit from the CBT before the end. • NOTE: If you close out of a “Test Me” type of CBT you must retake the entire “Test Me” from the beginning.

  25. The Closing Summary • The closing summary recaps the CBT you have just viewed. It is basically a short description of the lesson.

  26. What Are Some Other Things I Might See in a CBT? • As you progress through “Teach Me” and “Let Me Try” CBTs you may come across items called Helpful Hints and Notes (they usually appear at the top right hand corner of a screen and whenever you see one, you should click on it).

  27. Helpful Hints • Helpful Hints are little tidbits of information that may make the actions you are trying to perform easier (typically either a default needed in order to do something or just a quick tip).

  28. Notes • Notes are pieces of information that are normally more important than Helpful Hints and should ALWAYS be read.

  29. How Do I “Take” a CBT? • Simply click on the link for the CBT and it will begin. • When you are finished, you can continue on to the next CBT by clicking on its link.

  30. What Else Should I Know About Viewing a CBT? • Your screen resolution MUST be set to 1024x768 in order to view most CBTs. • To check this, click your START button, go to SETTINGS, and then CONTROL PANEL. Double-click DISPLAY, and then select the SETTINGS tab. Make sure your screen resolution is 1024x768 (click and drag the pointer left or right if necessary).

  31. What Else Should I Know About Viewing a CBT, continued • CBTs can only run as fast as your network and individual PC will let them. In rare cases, you may find that you are ‘faster’ than the CBT. If this happens, first just realize that it is OK, and then just adjust how fast you perform actions.
