Overview PURPOSE: To provided an overview of the procedure for screening and evaluating prospective students who desire to become active duty Medical Service Corps officers so that they become active duty social work officers by attending the Army MSW Program. • Program Overview • Prerequisites • Application Process • Application Packet • Timelines

Program Overview • Army MSW Program was created to serve as a force multiplier. • Program applicants are equipped to practice social work in a military community during their MSW and phase II internship • Program includes 2 phases: • Academic phase 1 (14 months) • Internship phase (24 months) • Students incur a 5 years and 2 months service obligation

Program Overview • Establish slots in the Army-Fayetteville State University (FSU) MSW program for active duty enlisted, commissioned officers, and civilians seeking to become active duty Army social work officers. • Compete with other USAREC accessions to fill up to 30 program slots. • All applications are pre-screened by the Army MSW Program at AMEDD Center & School prior to being reviewed by the USAREC selection board. • Oncethe selection board approves applicants, selectees will be approved by Fayetteville State University for admission.

Program Prerequisites • All applicants must: • Have a liberal arts undergraduate degree (Preferably in the social or behavioral sciences) • Have an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.0 • Score 290 (combination of quantitative & verbal) on GRE within 5 years of program start date • Be able to fulfill the service obligation • Meet the requirements to become active duty • Be approved by admission committees at AMEDD Center & School and Fayetteville State University • Meet the legal requirements to become a commissioned MSC officer

Application Process(Civilian Life Gain) • Civilian applicant contacts local recruiter • Recruiter determines eligibility for active duty • Recruiter prepares applicant’s accession packet with copies of undergraduate transcript, personal statement, letters of recommendation, and Graduate Record Exam scores • Recruiter submits original copy of packet to AMEDDC&S for pre-screen and approval (3 September 2012) • Recruiter submits accession packet to USAREC prior to 5 Feb 2013 board review • AMEDDC&S informs USAREC of applicants approved (tentatively) for admission by AMEDDC&S admission committee

Application Process(Civilian Life Gain) • USAREC board convenes and selects applicants for an order of merit list (OML) • USAREC provides Army MSW Program at AMEDDC&S of OML • AMEDDC&S submits original application packet to Fayetteville State University for final approval • AMEDDC&S informs USAREC of final approval and commissioning and/or class assignment process begins

Application Process(Enlisted & Non-Medical Service Active Duty Officers) • Enlisted applicant contacts local recruiter • Contact career manager to secure a conditional release • Works with local AMEDD Healthcare Recruiter to Prepare application packet with original copies of undergraduate transcript, personal statement, letters of recommendation, Graduate Record Exam scores, conditional letters of release, and other required documents per the most recent USAREC MILPER message • Submits original copy of packet to AMEDDC&S for pre-screen and approval (3 September 2012)

Application Process(Enlisted & Non-Medical Service Active Duty Officers Con’t) • AMEDDC&S sends a copy of the application packet to USAREC for board • AMEDDC&S informs USAREC of applicants approved (tentatively) for admission by AMEDDC&S admission committee • USAREC board convenes and develops an OML from applicants for upcoming MSW class • USAREC provides Army MSW Program at AMEDDC&S the OML • AMEDDC&S sends original application packet to Fayetteville State University for final approval

Application Process(Medical Service Corps (MSC)Active Duty Officers) • Active duty applicant contacts local recruiter • Works with local Healthcare Recruiter to prepare application packet with original copies of undergraduate transcript, personal statement, letters of recommendation, Graduate Record Exam scores, and other required documents IAW the most recent USAREC MILPER message • Submits original copy of packet to AMEDDC&S for pre-screen and approval (3 September 2012) • AMEDDC&S submits admission recommendations to USAREC for the February selection board

Application Process(Medical Service Active Duty Officers Con’t) • USAREC board convenes and selects applicants for an OML of the upcoming MSW class • USAREC provides Army MSW Program at AMEDDC&S a copy of the OML • AMEDDC&S sends original application packets to Fayetteville State University for final approval • AMEDDC&S informs USAREC of final acceptance once the university approves admission

  12. Application ProcessPart II • Civilian life gain and enlisted selected applicants are commissioned and receive orders to attend the Basic Officer Leadership Course (BOLC). • After successfully completing BOLC, selectees attend the MSW Program • Students attend phase I (14 months) of the MSW Program • After successful completion of phase 1, graduates attend phase 2 (24 months) of the MSW Program at a select internship site.

MSW Application Packet • Undergraduate transcript should reflect minimum overall GPA of 3.0 • Graduate Record Exam scores of 290 or higher • Enlisted and non-MSC officers provide conditional release from Branch to attend MSW Program. • Fayetteville State University Grad School application • 3 letters of recommendation • 3 FSU Recommendation for Grad School Forms • A signed personal statement

Application Packet Information • For information on personal statement components • To download a copy of the recommendation form for individuals writing letters of recommendation • To download a copy of the FSU Graduate School application form • Go to: http://www.uncfsu.edu/sw/fortsam/fortsam.htm • Academic applications packets should be mailed to AMEDDC&S • Send no money with academic application packets

  15. SUMMARY • GRE scores within 5 years of program start • Preferred undergrad will have degree in social work, psychology, criminal justice, sociology, or other social sciences • Applicants must be pre-approved by the AMEDDC&S and • University approves selectees after USAREC Board selection • Service obligation is 5 years and 2 months after completion of 24 month internship
