  2. Two parts to the introduction paragraph: • Contains a “lead” or “hook” • Purpose: to get your reader to be interested in what the rest of your paper contains. You are trying to “hook” them to peak their interest. • Contains a thesis statement • Purpose: to clearly communicate your topic and purpose of the paper to the audience. Introduction paragraphs

  3. A thesis statement is what you plan to prove or explain in your paper • It is the heart of your paper • Gives the main idea of the essay • It is one of the sentences in your introduction! Thesis Statement

  4. There are many interesting aspects about different countries around the world compared to how we live our lives in the United States. The paper that follows should: • explain the many differences about a country compared to the United States. (ie: economy, education, population, folklore) Example of an expository (explanatory) thesis statement:

  6. Adding the blues is like decorating the thesis! • This extra info gives readers the background they might need to understand your topic • The blues are the leads or hooks • They are an opportunity to educate or entertain your audience Adding the BLUES

  10. In theory, the yellow light on a traffic signal warns drivers to slow down. Unfortunately, drivers don’t always see it that way. Many speed up to avoid having to wait in traffic. Some are just in a hurry. If all drivers knew the facts behind “yellow light” accidents, they might be more willing to slow down. Example:

  12. Did you know that most patients want to shake hands with their physicians at the beginning of each appointment? This was according to a survey done by Northwestern University. The survey also stated that patients preferred to have doctors use their first names while being greeted. Clearly, being a doctor takes a lot of work and dedication in getting to know their patients.   13. “Life is like a bowl of sticky rice” as many Laotians would say. Laos has some important and unique folklore, religion and especially food.
