  3. 1. Literary Aspects of Film Literary aspects are those aspects that films share with literature. They include: • Plot • Characters • Setting • Themes • Point of view • Recurring images • Symbols Most reasons for enjoying a film are based on this literary level.

  4. Exercise: choose one of your favourite films and answer the following questions. • Who are the characters in the film? • What is the film’s setting? • Briefly summarize the plot. • From whose point of view is the story being told? • What is the theme of the film? • What is the mood of the film? • Did you notice any symbols in the film?

  5. 2. Dramatic Aspects of Film • Dramatic aspects are those elements that film shares with live drama. • Films, like plays, have actors portraying characters. • Characters engage in dialogue, and often wear costumes and make-up that are essential to establishing their character. • (cont’d)

  6. Dramatic Aspects of Film (cont’d) • Both plays and films have sets (and in the case of films, locations) that help the audience realize a sense of place. • Both have someone who directs and puts a personal stamp on the action of the play or film.

Exercise: Go back to your list of favourite films and complete the following: • Identify a movie that you went to see just because one of your favourite actors was in it. • Which of these movies would you say had excellent acting in it? Why? • Identify a movie in which the costumes, makeup, or sets were effective or unusual.

  9. 3. Cinematic Aspects of Film • Cinematic aspects of the film include technical terms that describe cinematography, sounds effects, music, editing, and special editing effects.

  10. Exercise: Refer back to your list of favourite films and complete the following: • Is there a movie on your list that stands out for its photography or visual effects? • Identify a scene from one of the movies that you now realize has effective editing. • Is there a movie on your list that has interesting sound effects or music? Explain.
