  1. Earth, Sky, and Preparing to Fly Rion Dooley

  2. Talking Points

  3. Talking Points • Enabling software for core functionality enabling local and distributed computing. • Cohesive functionality and interfaces • Stable and performant • Mature installation system, preferably auto-tuned MIDDLEWARE

  4. Talking Points • Where most people live… • Just above the middleware. • Accessibility is there, but most benefit without really being aware that it exists. MIDDLE EARTH

  5. Talking Points • Domain specific services that add value to the middleware. • This is where one can start to dream • Above the formality of experimentation • Begin to see further • Begin to gain perspective • Begin to expand our thinking and create opportunity CLOUDS

  6. Talking Points • Realm of gateways, application frameworks, and value-added end-user tools. • Clouds are useful, but it’s what happens above them that has the potential to accelerate science. • Everything moves faster in the jets stream. It’s an environment that does nothing but accelerate everything it comes into contact with. • Efforts are multiplied; range and reach are greatly expanded. JET STREAM

  7. General Philosophies “I would rather earn 1% off a 100 people's efforts than 100% of my own efforts.” – J. Paul Getty

  10. Add Value To People IMPACT

  11. General Philosophies “84.3% of scientists say they have to develop software to accomplish their science. 96.9% say they have informal self-study is very important to the process. 34.4% say formal education is important to the process.”[1] Put people in positions to succeed by playing to their strengths. Keep it light, kept it simple, keep it cohesive, and let people buy it at their own level. [1] Jo Erskine Hannay, Carolyn MacLeod, Janice Singer, Hans PetterLangtangen, DietmarPfahl, and Greg Wilson. 2009. How do scientists develop and use scientific software?. In Proceedings of the 2009 ICSE Workshop on Software Engineering for Computational Science and Engineering (SECSE '09). IEEE Computer Society, Washington, DC, USA, 1-8. http://software-carpentry.org/articles/how-scientists-use-computers-2009.pdf

  12. General Philosophies Sustainability derives from value. Give the market an opportunity to speak. Why not IT/CI costs as line items and let people vote with their dollars.

  13. General Philosophies Successful app stores/markets have large communities and the internal traffic creates incentive to contribute and opportunities to discover new things. Unsuccessful app stores/markets are called application registries.

  14. General Philosophies • Lack of innovation is due to a lack of: • passion • a market • or the ability to do so • Only one of these applies to this group.

  15. General Philosophies Marketing changes everything.
