  3. A Route to Value for Business Service Management

  4. “70% of IT budgets are spent on maintenance and operations, only 30% on value-add activities” * Operational Efficiency What is Driving Change? • Resource Constraints • Regulatory Implications • Slow Growing IT budgets (2-4%) • Industry Technological Advances • Reducing Complexity *Ray Paquet, Gartner, March 2005

  5. BMC Performance Manager PATROL CLASSIC PATROL EXPRESS BMC ApproachTheNext Step in Management Evolution • A single, integrated solution that brings together the robustness of PATROL classic with the ease of use and implementation of PATROL Express. Enterprise Event Integration Service Level Management Advanced Troubleshooting Value Administration & Configuration Intelligent Automation Performance Monitoring Up/Down Detection Capabilities

  6. Deployment Collection Managed Node PATROL Agent (via Console Server) Managed Node LIGHTWEIGHT LOCAL PRESENCE BMC Performance Manager Components • BMC Portal • Single interface with PATROL Express ease of use • SIM Portal –select to install, seamless integration with BMC Portal, view business elements • BMC Performance Manager Portal – PE and PATROL data, Configure PE Elements and leverage namespace of Console Server • Other Portals… BMC Performance Manager Portal Web Browser SIM Portal … Other Portals • BMC Performance Manager • Centralized and simplified configuration, reporting and distribution • RSM –configuration, administration, data collection, • Dynamic provisioning of LLP – provisioning happens under the covers, user get to schedule provisioning • Common data repository for reporting and analysis – centrally stores managed information and BMC Performance Manager configuration information Configuration Reporting BMC Portal Server • Managed Systems • Flexible data collection • Agentless - using standard communication protocols: PerfMon, WMI, rstatd, Secure Shell (SSH), SNMP, HTTP/HTTPS, SQL*NET, Ping, DNS • Lightweight Local Presence – minimum presence needed to gather data in specific cases Managed Node AGENTLESS Managed Systems

  7. One View One Architecture One License SDK Native Solutions High-Level Roadmap Q1 2005 Q2 2005 Q3 2005 Q4 2005 Q1 2006 Q2 2006 Data Integration Release Leverages existing investment in PATROL by centralizing data, reporting, and threshold management (12/05) Visualization Release Users can view PATROL 7, PATROL Express, SIM - information in the BMC Portal. (4/05) License Consolidation Single functional license across all BMC Performance Manager products (7/05) Native BMC Performance Manager Solutions Dynamic deployment based on user needs; no more dependencies on PATROL (12/05 ->) Allow users to build native applications (8/05) Continued delivery/support of PATROL

  8. BMC Performance ManagerUpgrade Plan • Three Transitional Phases • Visualization • Customers can view their PATROL 7 and SIM data in the BMC Portal console along side their PATROL Express data • Data Integration • Data collected via PATROL 3/7 is stored in the same common repository; PATROL Express reports and event management are seen as one regardless of where the data is collected • Final Transition • BMC Performance Manager Applications are deployed to fully exploit the features of BMC Performance Manager infrastructure • Remote / agent-less monitoring where possible

  10. 04/05 The “Visualization” Release BMC Performance ManagerCustomer Impact - Visualization • Associate existing PATROL 7 console with BMC Performance Manager • Use existing PATROL 3/7 tools to configure and deploy PATROL Knowledge Modules and Agents • Existing PATROL 3/7 for threshold management, event integration, and reporting • No need to uninstall or re-configure PATROL Agents or Knowledge Modules • The “visualization” release does not integrate with PATROL 3

  16. BMC Performance ManagerWhat Does it Mean to You? • BMC Performance Manager is an innovative “End to End Systems Management Solution” that improves business performance and reduces cost by enabling IT to shift focus from maintenance and operations to performing value added tasks INNOVATIVE APPROACH - Industry standard protocols - On-Demand deployment - Central view, configuration, administration, reporting CREATES BUSINESS ADVANTAGE - Lower cost of ownership (reduced administration and maintenance) - Increased value PROTECTS INVESTMENT - Building blocks for BSM: more commonality & better integration - Take advantage of current PATROL and technology investment PROVIDES FLEXIBILITY • Easy to use and implement • Automate Service Delivery Process - Scale quickly to meet dynamic business management needs

  17. What are the Next Steps? • Continue developing well instrumented infrastructure, this is critical for successful BSM implementation • Implement BMC Portal to visually integrate SIM, PATROL and PATROL Express • Consider expanding to PATROL Express in areas of appropriate business importance • Continue PATROL implementation and expansion to maximize the benefits of current investment • Work with BMC representative to expand to management capabilities using BMC Performance Manager architecture
