  1. Animation in Video Games By Adam Parsonage and Nick Harbour

  2. Why do we use animations in games? • Too create a realistic and awe inspiring environment within a video game. • Animate a character within a game. • Generally animation is used for almost everything.

  3. History • Started off as 2D sprites • Afterwards moved to 3D joint animation • Finally moving onto skin and skeleton.

  4. 2D Sprite Animation • Signetics produced the first video processor capable of generating sprite graphics • Similar to cel animation or flip books • Each movement was individually drawn.

  5. 3D Joint Animation The first 3d models were jointed Each joint was a separate and rigid object caused interpenetration at the joints

  6. Skin and Skeleton • Still use the method of joints • Now used for the skeleton of the model • Skin is modelled over the top and is modelled out of triangles • Skeleton is invisible to the player

  7. Other methods • Spine • Motion capture
