  3. Where is Sammamish?

  4. Project Description Sammamish Virtual Vault... • Is an engineering drawing search and retrieval system • Associates engineering drawings with project footprints layer • Is accessed through a custom ArcView 9.3 user interface • Allows search and retrieval of engineering drawings by city staff with ArcGIS Desktop installed • Has five search modes and one comprehensive report • Uses Visual Basic for Applications (VBA), an Address Locator, ModelBuilder, Python, Access, Excel, and a Web Browser

  5. Projects Spreadsheet

  10. Interface Search… By Parcel PIN By Project ID By Project name By browsing the map Find… An address and zoom to it Create… A complete project report

  11. VBA Script • VBA Script • Responds to UI button clicks • Uses address locator • Invokes appropriate report

  17. Documentation User's Guide

  18. Documentation Installation and Maintenance Guide

  19. Lessons Learned • The system is more complex ”under the hood” than it appears • There are limitations when managing toolbars in ArcGIS Desktop • Project file and models can be corrupted without warning • File geodatabase grows even if just reading (use "compact" tool) • Don't know what directory ArcGIS will run script in (use absolute paths) • Query syntax different for shapefiles vs. geodatabases

  20. Successes • Stayed on schedule • City staff available and willing to help • Visit to Seattle Public Utilities validated use of PDF files and HTML reports • Environment settings file a good first step • Delivered good documentation • Implemented reasonable search and retrieval system within ArcGIS Desktop

  21. Live Demo Live Demo

  22. Future Recommendations • Add columns to report (make it customizable?) • Make the system easier to install (more environment settings in one place) • Move the system to the internet so customers can do their own searches • Link to the CAD as-built files • Search using sub-sets of data (e.g. search only R.O.W. projects) • Search using direct SQL queries in addition to the buffer method • Develop a complete drawing management system
