  4. Why Are Rules Important? • Safety • Order • Cleanliness • Welcoming environment • Encourages positive attitude. • FOCUSED ON LEARNING!

Our Class Rules • Respect the people and property of room 235. • No talking while others are talking. • No talking while Mrs. Berg is talking. • Come to class prepared and on time. • No eating or drinking in class – except for water in a clear container. • You MUST have materials everyday! • Be an active participant in class. a. No sleeping in class. • Follow instructions the first time they are given. a. I have the right to teach, you have the right to learn. • Follow all rules of the handbook.

  6. If you choose to break a rule: Discipline Possibilities: • Warning • Isolation and reflection. • Kept after the bell. (if you waste my time, I will waste yours.) • Common sense consequences. • Detention. **4 detentions is an automatic referral.** • Referral.

  7. Grading Procedures • 2 kinds of grades, major and minor. • Major grades are quizzes, tests, and projects. (60% of quarter grade) • Minor grades are daily work such as homework and in-class assignments. (40% of quarter grade) • I do not give grades, you earn them!

Make-Up Work • I accept late homework 1 DAY LATE with a penalty of 10 points off. • I accept late projects 3 DAYS LATE with a penalty of 10 points off every late day. • Missed tests/quizzes must be made up within 5 days. • Make-up work is found in the envelopes on the wall. • Make-up work is YOUR responsibility!

Class Expectations: At the end of this semester each of you should . . • Write a full 5 paragraph essay with an intro, body and conclusion explaining your position on something. • Give a presentation in front of the class. • Know 50 major countries and geographical landmarks on the world map. • Work in a team to accomplish a goal. • Read and outline the textbook in a way that makes sense. • Read a historical book and write a book report. • State your opinion clearly and logically in a debate setting.

  13. Bellwork: 1/18/12Use the class syllabus and materials list to answer the following questions. True or False: • In Mrs. Berg’s class, I only get two chances to come to class without materials. • If I sleep in Mrs. Berg’s class I get 3 warnings before a punishment. • If I talk while others are talking, I will be given an immediate referral. • After 5 detentions, I get an immediate referral. • In Mrs. Berg’s class we will study history and geography. • If I do not do my homework I only have 1 day to make up the work. • If I do not have my project done one time I can be three days late, but I will loose 50 points. • In Mrs. Berg’s class, we have to bring colored pencils to class every day. • In Mrs. Berg’s class, I am not allowed to talk while the teacher is talking. • In Mrs. Berg’s class, the first unit is going to be about world geography.

  15. Basic Geography Terms • Latitude and Longitude lines – imaginary lines that measure the earth. • Equator – runs East-West (Latitude) • Prime Meridian – runs North-South (Longitude) • Degrees – the way we measure the earth.

(write small) • Label the 6 bodies of water that surround the region and color them blue. • Draw in the approximate location of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers in blue. • Color the desert climate red. • Color the Steppe and Mediterranean climates Green. • Color areas that have a density of 260 or more people in a square mile in purple. • What industry is mainly found around the Persian Gulf? • What industries are found around the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers? • What industries are found around the Mediterranean Sea?

  28. Geography Booklet Questions • What are common misconceptions about geography? • Name the three systems of geography. • Which system observes migration, economics and politics? • Which system observes landforms, climate and rivers? • What is one of the specialized fields ofgeography?

  29. Culture • Start with students telling me aspects of culture. • I write on board. • Ask them to group them together – how do they connect? Can we label them? • (list, group, label) • Then, give a short lecture about 3 areas of culture and examples of them. • Then, have students do culture assignment about themselves – they read. Then, on the flip side they do something from National Geographic.

  31. Culture Assignment 1. Every individual will go and get a National Geographic magazine. 2. Select a culture, any culture, so long as it is not one of your own. 3. List 3 physical characteristics the culture you selected has in common. 4. Find 4 cultural ideas that the people have in common.
