The Purpose of ELA • To learn how to communicate effectively and appropriately • To better understand the reading, writing, speaking connection • To be able to connect knowledge/academics to real life – learn about humanity • To establish a personal connection/ownership in one’s writing and communication skills

  3. Topics studies by genre • Reading: • Fiction, Non-fiction, Drama, Poetry • Writing: • Narrative, Persuasive, Expository, Descriptive and Creative

  4. Textbooks used in ELA • THE WRITE SOURCE • the basis of the writing curriculum • GREEK AND LATIN ROOTS/WARRINER’S/WORDS TO GO • THE LANGUAGE OF LITERATURE • literary terms & devices, reading comprehension, journal writing, independent reading… • TOUCHING SPIRIT BEAR • THINGS NOT SEEN

  5. Personal Connection • Journals – response to reading • Writing assignments – selection within genre • Pre-writing/brainstorming • Speeches/Shared work experiences • Research topics • Computer web-quests • Library research

Effective and Appropriate Communication • Knowledge of parts of speech/grammar skills = more effective, understandable sentence structure • Knowledge of vocabulary, word choice/selection, reading genres = better, diversified paragraphs • Exposure to writing genres/use of the writing process steps = appropriate choice/selection for better essays and research papers

  7. Organization is key • Preparation points • Binder cleanouts • Assignment books updated • Journals in crates • Check out books or read in class • Independent reading logs/Book Projects

  8. School/Home Communication • Absences – call friend, check homework website, prior arrangements… • Discipline – follow NRMS handbook/class rules • Warning first/talk to student privately • Note/email or call home • School Discipline slip issued • Follow school procedure from this point • Safety issues warrant stricter measures

  9. Grading • I use a “Total Points” system • All points are cumulative for each quarter. • Rubrics are given out/study guides • Homework = less points, but affects quiz/test averages **** • Assessments include: • Homework • Quizzes, tests • Projects/journals • Participation/preparation points
