On The Agenda Part 1 Introduction of UOML Part 2 UOML Use Case
Part 1 Introduction of UOML
What is UOML? • The “Unstructured Operation Markup Language” • An OASIS standard • Not a document storage format … • … but an abstract document model and ... • … an according set of instructions to access the objects of the abstract document model • The equivalent of SQL (structured data) for unstructured data • Software that implements UOML is called DoCbase Management System (DCMS) • Virtual Printing Technology (Works as Real Paper)
History • Dec 2005 – UOML Alliance founded • Jan 2007 – OASIS UOML Technical Committee(TC) was officially formed • Mar 2008 – Public Review of UOML CD • May 2008 – UOML TC IPR transferred into RF on RAND, and the TC renamed UOML-X TC • Oct 2008 – UOML Part 1 v1.0 becomes OASIS Standard • Dec 2009 – The State Electricity Regulatory Commission of China launched the project "Electronic document work flow platform based on UOML” • Recent – UOML-X TC works on UOML Part 1 v1.1 and Part 2 (Security)
UOML Interoperability • UOML enables layout-based interoperability with all kinds of digital documents • ODF • OOXML • MS binary legacy • CAD • Web pages • Graphical formats • GIS – Maps
UOML – Design Principles • Simple • Use of XML • Based on Open Standards • Independent of programming language • Vendor neutral • Defining the abstract Structure of Documents • Structure must be highly universal • Define the abstract operation of the documents • Only define basic operations. • Structural restrictions only depend on the document structure • There is no limit to physical storage and implementation
UOML compared with SQL • DoCbase<=> UOML • Unstructured Information • Stream of Random Objects and Commands • Database <=> SQL • Structured Information • Table model in rational databases • UOML <=> SQL • DoCbase <=> SQL Database
UOML compared with PDF • UOML is an Operation Interface Standard • DoCbasehandles document information • UOML is used to access the DoCbase • PDF is a Document Storage Format
UOML Market • UOML is an Ideal e-Solution to Replace Traditional Paper Work(flow) • eGoverment • eBusiness • Legal (Secure Signatures) • Health Information Systems • Data Acquisition • Archiving
