This project focuses on evaluating the physical and chemical quality of peat organic matter in the UK. Researchers Rebekka Artz and Stephen Chapman are preparing two papers - one with FTIR data and another analyzing the impact of regeneration on organic matter. They are using FTIR spectroscopy to assess the composition of organic matter and studying the geographical origin's influence on the peat's characteristics. Initial results suggest a shift towards intact peat indicators in various regions. A comprehensive analysis is underway to understand these trends further.

D17 Assessment of FTIR as an indicator of OM quality • 1st Paper (in prep.) including the FTIR data for which the full organic matter characterisation has been performed • 2nd Paper (in prep.) of the full WP1 FTIR dataset, to determine the effect of regeneration phase on organic matter
FR SC Composition of WP1 organic matter by FTIR spectroscopy The main determinant is geographical origin. Within each country, a gradual return to patterns indicative of intact peat is seen
