History • Born, March 30th 1964 in Cleveland, Ohio • Raised by a single mother • Learned to play guitar and ukulele as a child • She began writing songs and playing guitar at the age of 8 • Chapman was raised Baptist and went to an Episcopal high school • Attended Tufts university
Beginning of music career • While attending Tufts University, she became fascinated with folk rock. • She started performing her own music in coffee shops and busking in Harvard Square. Another Tuft student, Brian Koppelman, heard Chapman playing and brought her to the attention of his father, Charles Koppelman who ran SBK publishing. • Signed with Elektra records in 1988
Music style • Tracy Chapman’s style of music is mainly folk but her style also encompasses pop, rock and blues • Most of her songs are sung to the sound of her Martin acoustic guitar. An American made brand considered by professionals to be the best acoustic guitar on earth. • She also plays, Ukulele and the piano heard in her very popular song “Fast Car” and many others
