  2. How Jigsaw Works Break the class into expert groups Expert groups do one portion of assignment Home group = one person from each expert group Each expert in the home group teaches his or her concept to the rest of the group

In Geometry… • When teaching about transformations • Split the class into three expert groups: • Translations • Rotations • Reflections • Have the expert groups explore their transformation, giving a definition and example • Form groups of three for the home group • Have them collaborate to learn about all three types of transformations

  4. Why use it? Initially developed as a way to break down racial and cultural barriers Discovered to be a way to enhance student comprehension Hands on learning Provides a small scale opportunity to work on oral presentation skills

  5. Possible Downsides? • Students in the home group may simply copy each other to fill in their assignment without teaching each other or fully comprehending the concept • Have a quiz over the material to affirm that this is a learning activity to take seriously • Students learn and teach each other incorrectly • The teacher walks around the room and provides guidance wherever necessary
