what is service learning
What is Service-Learning?
  • a hands-on teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities.

Learn and Serve America;


Benefits for the Student

  • gives you hands-on experience in the real world.
  • deepens your knowledge of complex issues.
  • promotes critical thinking and action.
  • integrates theory with practice.
  • enhances your understanding of diverse cultures & people.
  • builds your resume—both academic and professional!

Choosing a SL Position

  • Are there specific issues or populations with which you would like toserve
  • Does your schedule fit with the available days/times & duration of service commitment listed for the position?
  • Do you have or need transportation?
  • What skills, interests, and abilities do you bring to this experience?

SL Assignments

  • Your instructor will define your service requirements and opportunities.
  • Make sure to read your syllabus and ask questions so you are clear about what is expected of you.

The Service-Learning Contract

Fill out your Course Learning Objectives before you attend your on-site orientation.

Bring your Service-Learning Contract to your on-site orientation. Fill it out with your site supervisor. You will turn this into your professor.


RecordingYour Service Hours

Have your site supervisor sign for your hours. You will turn your Quarterly Record of Service Hours into your professor at the end of the quarter.
