  4. Major Steps for Paper • Pick a topic • Start Research- hi-light, brainstorm! • Thesis statement • Continue research & Do Note Cards (keep track of sources!) • Works Cited (as you go!) • Outline • Revise outline • Revise Works Cited • Turn Outline into A DRAFT • Revise Draft • Final Paper

How to pick a topic • Take a position on a topic and persuade your readers • Examples: • Cell phones should be banned in schools! • Abortion is wrong and should be illegal • All schools should have school uniforms! • School lunches should be more nutritious • Video-game violence needs to be controlled • Schools should not teach sex education

  7. How to pick a topic • Pick a topic you are interested in • Pick a position (for or against) you believe in • Pick a topic with enough information, but not too much • Narrow or widen your search • You need to use a minimum of 5 sources. Choose a topic that has enough sources.

  8. Start Research • Print out articles in library • Read, hi-light and brainstorm! • Make sure you save your sources as you go in the correct format! (next slide) • Do not wait to do your sources “later”

  12. What is a Thesis Statement? • Lets the reader know your position (are you for or against it?) • Lets the reader know what is coming up

  13. Thesis Statement Formula ___(Topic)_________ should __(raised/lowered/changed/required/etc.)__ because reason #1, reason #2, and reason #3. Example: Schools should require uniforms because they make schools safer, improve academic discipline, and improve attendance

  14. Thesis statement: How do I know what reasons #1, #2 and #3 are? • Look at what you hi-lighted in your articles • Group the main ideas together • Think about how you will organize your paper • Read and hi-light more if you need to

  19. Note Cards- Front Quote- COPY EXACTLY! “In the 1980s, public schools were often compared unfavorably to Catholic schools. Noting the perceived benefit that uniforms conferred upon Catholic schools, some public schools decided to adopt a school uniform policy” (Lastname 46). Note Cards-How Many Note Cards Do I Need? • 8-10 body paragraphs • Each body paragraph has 2+ quotes • You need at least 2 notes cards from 5 sources • ( 1 quote per notecard) • 8 x 2 = 16 note cards may work for some • 10 x 2 = 20 note cards may work for others • It is likely you will need 20+ note cards because you will end up throwing some away. • Do you want to have to go back and redo your research?

What does an outline look like? • Introduction • Ask a question! • Gangs have many negative effects on our society. • We need to spend more resources to figure out why kids join gangs and what we can do to end gangs. II. Negative Affects • There are many negative effects related to gangs • Gang violence causes fear and changes how kids behave in school • In a poll of 2,000 teenagers, “the respondents reported that their fears of violence often affect how they behave and perform in school.” (“Teens’ Fears” 1). • This demonstrates that fear of gang violence affects their learning • “About 13% said that they had performed poorly in school because of their concerns about crime and violence.” (“Teens’ Fears” 1). • Many teens fear gangs.

Negative Affects • Leads to innocent deaths from shootings • “Many victims of gang-related violence are innocent bystanders” (“Everything You Need to Know about Street Gangs” 19). • This means that innocent people are affected by gang violence • Leads to felony convictions and lead to an increase of crime and drug runs • “As a member, Shelia was used for drug runs” (“All You Need to Know about Street Gangs” 46). • This shows that members of a gang are manipulated and encouraged or forced to commit crimes.
