  3. SHS and it’s history … Founded in 1948, IIE is dedicated to serving the professional needs of industrial engineers and all individuals involved with improving quality and productivity. Health services became part of IIE in 1968. SHS officially became a society of IIE in 1988. The society's mission is to contribute to the improvement of healthcare processes through systems engineering, analysis, and process improvement methods. SHS encourages the exchange of ideas and innovative techniques among healthcare professionals through a variety of mediums. Among the more than 700 members of SHS are management engineers, nurses, CEOs, directors of continuous improvement, administrators, clinicians, physicians, department managers, and students.

Bush (Republican) defeats Michael Dukakis (Democrat) • Suspected Libyan terrorist bomb explodes on Pan Am jet over Lockerbie in Scotland on December 21st killing all 259 on board and 11 on the ground • Savings and Loan scandals • March 16 – Iran-Contra Affair: Lieutenant Colonel Oliver North and Vice Admiral John Poindexter are indicted on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States • TECHNOLOGY • The Hubble Space Telescope is put into operation • The US Stealth Bomber is unveiled • First transatlantic fiber optic cable laid able to carry 40,000 telephone calls simultaneously • The first major computer virus infects computers connected to the Internet.

  19. Initiatives A. Host expert panel discussions or offer “masters level” sessions at 2011 conference. Bring leaders to the table and encourage dialogue • B. Engaging diplomates in specific mission (maybe as defined above) C. Immediately contact all 2010 attendees post-conference • D. Expand poster sessions at 2011 conference • E. Improve "Welcome Kit" for new members • F. Pursue SHS / ASQ joint memberships • G. Partnering Opportunities: Aligning with professional or corporate organizations • ASQ IE Educators Premier • Military/Gov’t Mayo Clinic VA CoE • Veterans Health Association • H.   22. Initiatives • A. Grow web & additional resource so that every IE student knows health care is an option for their career: Initiate on-line education for IEs new to health care • B. Provide canned presentation & tools to engage our membership to easily reach out to universities. • C. Combine conference presentations into topical webinar • D. Continue offering Webinars / Seminars: Offer content & partner with other professional organizations similar to HIMSS ME-PI • E. SHS should have a stronger core message and strategic initiative: drive that message with associated marketing • F. Create packaged toolkits / disseminate education programs to put in front of CMO, MHA school programs, Medical school. • G. Identify best conference presentation & use ghostwriting to publish presentations • H. Take advantage of current technology tools / websites / social networking making them ever present • I.
