  2. Late 1970s • President Geisel was in power: he suppressed opposing parties to keep power • 1978, Geisel restored habeas corpus (which he had taken away) and made General Figueiredo his successor in ‘89 (an issue which had been widely debated)

  3. 1980s economy and politics • Brazil’s economy had depended on imported oil. When oil doubled in price, Brazil’s foreign debt also grew • Inflation accelerated • Many presidential terms passed by, and the adaptation of a new Constitution replaced authoritarian legislation

  4. 1980s • Thrash metal became a popular music choice • Skateboarding and rollerblading became popular

  5. Latin America • There was a rise in foreign debt throughout as oil prices skyrocketed • Incomes dropped and inflation skyrocketed • Many authoritarian dictatorships, like Brazil’s military regime, collapsed
