  1. The Muscular System

  2. Skeletal Muscles • These muscles are what we think about when we think of our muscles. • These muscles are voluntary meaning that unlike the other systems these muscles work only when you tell them to. • The light and dark strips on these muscles make them look like they’re striped.

  3. Cardiac Muscles • The only cardiac muscle in your body is your heart. • It is controlled by the Medulla Oblongata, which controls all of the involuntary action throughout your body. • As you probably know, your heart pumps blood through your body. • Your heart is an involuntary muscle.

  4. Smooth Muscles • Smooth muscles are involuntary, meaning that they work without being told to • Smooth muscles make up all the involuntary muscles except the heart. • Smooth muscles are usually in sheets or layers stacked up one behind the other. • These muscles also keep your eyes focused.

  5. Strains and Sprains • A strain is when a muscles is stretched too far. • A sprain has occurred when a ligament is stretched or torn. • A ligament is what helps hold your bones together.

  6. Facial muscles • Facial muscles don’t attach to bones like they do in the rest of the body. • The muscles attach under the skin. • This allows you to move your muscles just a little bit. That allows you to make all kinds of crazy faces. • Your tongue is a muscle that is attached at one end!!!!

  7. More Facts • Without muscles you wouldn’t be able to move. • You wouldn’t even be able to see straight. • You have over 200 muscles in your body!!!! • You can’t really build up your muscles until you’re older, but you can do things to keep your muscles healthy.
