History of CORC • Cooperative Online Resource Catalog (CORC) • Initial concept and proposal: • Office of Research retreat, Summer 1998 • Rationale: • The Web is increasingly the information conduit of choice • Librarians and libraries can add value to the Web as a information resource through: • Selection of quality resources • Superior description and indexing • Better presentation of selected resources • OCLC can help: • Extending OCLC’s cooperative model • Providing new tools

History of CORC (cont.) • Founders Phase (18 months) • Participants meetings: • May 1999, November 1999, July 2000 • Expands to ~500 libraries from 23 countries • Added approximately 25,000 records, 600 pathfinders • Users provide valuable guidance on design • CORC goes production: July 1, 2000 • Now: CORC Users Group • Officers: Suzanne Pilsk, Jackie Shieh • Next meeting: ALA, Monday January 15, 2001

OCLC CORC™ service Overview • System requirements: current Web browser • All* users with Web access and OCLC cataloging authorizations may access CORC • *Exceptions: Cataloging Agent, CatExpress program • Pricing parallels standard OCLC Cataloging Service pricing • Two systems: • CORC production system (corc.oclc.org) • CORC practice system (purl.oclc.org/corc/practice)

CORC Resource Catalog Record • Initially a catalog of records for e-resources • Approx. 360,000 resource records (as of 10/2000) • Key features: • Boolean searching of Resource Catalog • Standard searching of WorldCat from CORC • CORC RC is synchronized with WorldCat • Supports harvesting data from Web pages to create initial records (single or multi-record) • User may choose Dublin Core or MARC editing views; output in MARC, DC HTML, DC RDF • Offers authority checking and linking features

CORC Authority File • Identical in scope to OCLC Cataloging service authority file • LC name, title, subject records • Key features: • Ability to search authority records • Keyword (Search) • Phrase (Browse) • Ability to control headings • Enable global replace of headings (automatic) • Ability to export authority record (MARC only)

CORC Pathfinder Database • Pathfinders are edited lists of selected resources • The institution which creates a pathfinder may: • Retain full editing privileges • Share editing with selected additional institutions • Pathfinders may be cloned • Multiple choices for adding content: • Importing, keying, cutting and pasting • Linking to RC records, “canned” searches of the RC • Linking to graphics, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) • May be exported as: • HTML page • Link (PURL and/or URL)

  20. WebDewey™ in CORC • Dewey Decimal Classification available through the Web • Includes: • DDC suggestion tool for classifying Web sites during harvesting • DDC-to-LCSH mapping • Access: • Currently only accessible through CORC • Requires ordering and an annual fee • Updated quarterly
