OUR GENESISA Brief History of the GRCF Challenges • Faced with the challenge of sustaining social and related development issues • Pockets of wealth – Platinum – little benefit to local community • Increase of poverty, unempolyment and HIV/AIDS Community decision • GRCF established – public launch 2000 • Established unrestricted endowed fund – 2001 • Office and staff appointed – May 2001 • First NGO/CBO Conference – September 2001 • First grant making event – March 2002

A local (South African) manifestation of a Community Foundation • Independent, private philanthropic institution • Publicly supported • Serves the interest of the public good in a specific geographic area (greater Rustenburg district) • Mobilizing resources and acting as a steward over these resources • Permanent endowed (invested) funds – grant making • Local grant maker – grassroots • Support local NGO’s/CBO’s – capacity development • Tax exempted • Provide donor services • Governed by an independent , reflective, credible, respected, expertise and influential Board of Trustees – local individuals • Managed by a professional Executive together with a small dedicated team

Purpose - GRCF Purpose • Promoting a sense of community philanthropy /giving • Mobilizing and pooling resources • Establishing permanent endowed funds – PERPETUITY! • Donor services • Innovative and responsive grant making • Support services to local NGO’s/CBO’s • Providing local leadership • Convener/facilitator • Agent of change • Research – provide access/dissemination to/off information • Networking/partnerships

  6. Who gives to the GRCF • Local community members/individuals • Local business • Volunteers • Other foundations/ Family foundations • Corporate donors – CSR/CSI • International grant makers/Foundations • Government agencies

  7. The KING Report – SA - 1994 “Good corporate governance is concerned with managing the balance between the economic and social goals and between individual and communal goals. To stretch this point further, today's corporations should strive to strike the balance between the demands to become globally competitive with its responsibilities to the society in which they function. Business need to actively participate in the policy development process to ensure that private sector interests are taken into consideration and also develop a strong and vibrant local identity and strengthen community linkages”

Why do Extractive Industry Corporations give through local Community FoundationsThe GRCF Experience • To enhance the impact of CSR in the Greater Rustenburg community • GRCF offers tailor-made solutions • Different options of pooling resources with other local stakeholders • GRCF disseminate information to and from the community • Research and CAMP program helps inform the extractive industry regarding their CSR programs and policy • GRCF has a professional and well developed grantmaking process • GRCF helps with evaluation and monitoring – impact of CSR • Avoid duplication • Not having to say NO anymore • Making a contribution in perpetuity • Leaving a legacy beyond exit – Life beyond Platinum! • Adhere to the Mining Charter
