  1. What am I Making? I will be making a number of products under the theme of ‘division collage’. ‘Division collage’ is a mixture of different series, such as: • ‘A Poster every day’ by Magdiel Lopez • ‘Faces Un Bonded’ by Marcelo Monreal • ‘Natural Act’ by MerveÖzaslan The products will come in the form of merchandise such as clothing prints, canvas prints, and CD covers for a chosen band.

  2. Why am I Making it? Since the start of this year I have found the aesthetics of retro collage to be very interesting. It is a clever mixing of worlds that result in some very surreal and satisfying imagery. The division element of the project came about while researching alternative ideas, realising the two styles were similar, I wanted to blend them and make them my own. I have some experience with making retro collage pieces, using elements from advertisements from the 1950s-60s. I even featured my own photography from past projects to use as a foundation. This experience is part of my motivation to head in this direction

  3. Purpose of my Product The purpose of my project is to promote this indie rock band and create a professional-looking brand with a clear house style. I want the merchandise to be of a high standard, something that the target audience would genuinely consider purchasing.

  4. Tone and Feel of my Product The overall tone of my project will reflect the inner qualities that make us who we are. Although the products are merchandise for a band, they will each convey something slightly different depending on what/who they are designed for. The surreal nature of the ‘division collage’ work creates a feeling of familiarity and mystery at the same time, resulting in some imagery that steals your gaze. Although the imagery is strange, it is not off-putting either.

  5. The Message There is a hidden complexity in any one of us, a complexity which can only be understood and appreciated by removing our masks. Our masks can be in complete contrast to who we really are, ‘division collage’ is about opening up – even if just a little.

  6. Audience Avatar My customer avatar is James, a 20 year old university student who shares a city flat with his friends. He has loved indie rock music since his first festival as a teen, and his flatmates share an equal love for the genre. James is always up to date on the latest festivals, upcoming albums, and rising bands. When not at a gig, James will be listening to his favourite bands on CD and streaming sites. As a student working a part-time job, he has little income, but makes ends meet to see his favourite bands. With a little to spare afterwards, he often picks up some merch or purchases it online. By buying the band’s merchandise, he feels like he is giving back to them, while also expanding his own collection. James has always held a fondness for TV and cinema from the 1950s and 1960s, finding the aesthetics to be very interesting and pleasing to the eye. He was recently handed down a range of magazines and catalogues which have revived his interest.

  7. Skills I Will Employ I will make use of my graphic design knowledge, and my Photoshop skills. These will come in handy, as creating a decent product requires a degree of experience, and after making a number of posters and magazines, I believe I meet that level of skill. My limited knowledge of retro collage will come in handy also, but will be expanded upon with further research. It will be useful as I am aware of some of the conventions and aesthetics surrounding retro collage, and therefore can follow them. I enjoy the genre of music the products will be made for, and am aware of a number of bands an their design leanings.

  8. What I Will Avoid In previous projects I have fallen behind schedule when making the finishing products. This is often down to being too picky with minor details, and not moving on until all issues are resolved. If I am to create the quality products I have mentioned, I will need to move past the smaller issues and focus on polishing each piece later on. I often find I do not create physical copies of my work, something I wish to change in this project. Making physical copies will act as proof of concept, adding another layer to the depth of my work.
